My brother took this pic while down in New Orleans and he has asked me to fix and print it for him as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately he converted the original to sepia and saved it so he lost all the color information. Is this salvageable? What can I do to fix the blown out whites and bring back some detail? Thank you.

Once whites are blown out there's virtually no way to bring back the detail. Even if you could bring it back, this picture suffers from severe camera shake, way to much to correct for with smart sharpen in CS2 or software. I'd tell your brother it can't be done.

I can fix everything in this pix except the blur.

May I see it?

Here's my quick try. I used focus magic to fix the motion blur. Then an illusion--grain helps us perceive further sharpness. Then shadow highlights. Then general messing around.

My feeling also is that this picture can not be improved 'enough' to be print worthy but....
Try a couple rounds of duplicate layer (multiply) at 30 to 50 % flattened then duplicate and a high pass filter (overlay) will sharpen then various cloning obviously was done some here and there burn highlights then a mask (reverse vingette) to lighten up the periphery and then finally converted to B&W and "maybe' it's a little better. Thanks for the challenge.

Since blur is one of the big problems with the picture, why not increase it?:

In general though, I think "fixing" problem shots is not the way to go.

I like your thinking :-)

Actually, the blur isn't the main problem. Focus magic varies in it's effectiveness on motion blur, but on this shot, it's pretty effective. You might have to take more time than I did, since the amount of motion blur can vary on different parts of the image. I chose the other processing because it did look like an old time shot, and the grain (which may be to heavy) to address some of the burnout as well as add perceived sharpness.

New Orleans? Wow, I would have sworn that was Central Park right outside Tavern on the Green!

Thanks everyone for helping me out. For some reason my brother just loves this picture. He's not into photography so he has no idea of the challenge this is for me. Thanks again.
