Hi there,

Yes, it's been done numerous times before, but I only recently discovered how to do it so bear with me :)

I printed this out on photo paper, and it looks pretty decent to me, although a comment I received was to maybe lighten the background more so that "Freddy" is more prominent in the foreground.

Any suggestions/comments to that would be greatly appreciated!

Your layer mask looks pretty darn good to me. As far as the background needing to be lightened... maybe a little, but it doesn't seem that much too dark to me.

I might would pop Freddy's saturation up a notch to make his tans really pop out though.

Sorry, let me clarify my comment that I received.

I dont think it's too dark as it is 'sharp'

So I was suggesting blurring it slightly, but the response was just to soften and lighten it a bit with curves.

Yeah, I have to be careful with this though, i'm afraid of making it too much, so that it's almost unnatural.

yeah, I understand... yeah a Guassian Blur would work well on the background... but....

To keep that natural looking you're going to have to select an area around Freddy that is in his plane of focus and keep it in focus and feather out to the out of focus portions of the background.

Considering my limited photoshop experience, you couldve just told me how to assemble a nuclear bomb...

Whoops sorry... looking at your pic.. the foreground is mostly in focus, but the background is out of focus. Select only that top part of the background that is out of focus. Feather the Slection and then run a guasian blur on it. I hope that is clearer. :-) I need to quit watching my score on Even and go to bed, it's 2:35 am.

lol I just learned how to do this recently myself thanks to another member here. that's a great pic though! I posted one a couple days ago of a closeup of my daughters face and only left her eyes colored.

It's too much fun messing around with this stuff isn't it?

Thanks for the comment!
I was trying to find the pic you were talking about (your daughter) but to no avail?

It is fun... but I must say, once you know how, your options with a photo suddenly increases tenfold!

You already used a layer mask for the selective desaturation, right?

Use the same type of technique for the blur. Duplicate the background layer, and create a new mask layer. On that mask layer, use a gradient flood fill / paint bucket...white at the top, black closer to you. Also, you will want Freddy to be masked from the blur, so paint the mask black where he is at. On the copy of the background, apply the gaussian blur.

By having the blur/mask in a separate layer group, you can go back and adjust or turn it off very easily.
