how do you crop a photo in photoshop, and maintain the photo's ability to keep a 640/480 resolution? I tried cropping a photo once in photoshop and after, i tried to size is at 640, but the other value turned out to be something like 430 instead of 480.

I found the easiest way to do it is select the crop tool, and when it opens up, click 'front image' If you type values in there for height/width something like 6.4in and 4.8in and then 100pixels/per inch, the crop will be constrained to this ratio.

Also, if your original image is in the correct ratio, just hit 'front image' and it will constrain the proportions for you.

Think this may apply a 'resize' as well though - not sure.

I'm sure there must be an easier way of doing this - its a complete pain :)

I'm a not using Photoshop, but the technique I use with Corel PhotoPaint might work as well with Photoshop:
I open a new image sized 640x480 and then paste the original image as a new object/layer in this new image. Then I can move it around with my mouse or cursorkeys. When I'm satisfied with the result, I combine the object/layer with the background and save it.

Well one way of doing this would be to have your existing image open, create a new image at 640x480. Select all on the 640x480 image and save the selection, then open the saved selection in your original image then crop.

That may not work as easy as going to the 640x480 image filling in the image with a color, copy the entire image, paste as a layer in your orginal photo and set it to a 10% tranparency, move it to where you want it, use the magic wand to select the area of the layer, hide the 640x480 layer, select the original layer and your marque should still be there, crop and your done.

That didn't seem easier now that I look at it.

There's always the simple 'constrained aspect ratio' method. Switch to the rectangular selection tool, set it's mode to 'constrained aspect ratio', and set the width and height to 3:4 or 4:3. Drag the selection around what you want and it will stay the right shape as it gets larger. When you have it at the size you want, let go of the mouse button and click on it somewhere on the inside to drag it exactly where you want it. Crop the picture, and it should resize perfectly to 640X480 (or 480X640) when you're done adjusting the levels and stuff.
