I'm getting confused (not hard to happen) about setting my D100 with 80-400 VR lens for lowlight, kids soccer games. Shutter or aperature priority? What about white balance? Again, probably mixed lighting, some sun, some clouds. Also, keep ISO auto on or should I decide the 'film' speed?

I personally would shoot in Aperture priority mode. Go wide open (f/5.6 in your case) and try to get your shutter speed around 1/500 to 1/600 by upping your ISO.

IMO, go with Shutter Priority set to 1/250th or faster. With mixed lighting, I would just leave the WB on auto. On my cameras, auto ISO is not available in Av or Tv modes. Use the smallest ISO possible, of course.

Aperture priority, leave the Aperture at the widest setting (smallest number), watch your shutter speed, 1/500 at least, adjust the ISO to get the Shutter speed you need.

ps: And shoot RAW to take care of the WB

Okay, so far 2-1 Ap vs.Shut. priority. I generally keep it on continuous or burst mode, so shooting in RAW limits and slows my picture taking. Maybe I need a D2X. Just don't tell my wife. ha-ha

DO NOT shoot in shutter priority...and DO NOT think that 1/250 of a second is enough at 600mm...it just isn't.

If you do shoot in shutter priority, at say 1/500...chances are you'll be fine most of the time, but then as soon as the sun jumps out, you're still shooting at 1/500...but now your lens is stopping down automatically to f/9, f/11, and you're sacrificing that tight DOF that you're after and getting the background in focus.

--

Control what you need to -- aperture...bump your ISO, if your shutter speed jumps up, you're still fine.

--

EDIT:

shooting in RAW IMO for this is pointless. Think about the countless number of photos you're going to go through and the endless amount of space you'll save shooting JPG. When it comes down to it, they're either keepers or they're not...shooting in RAW isn't going to help.

I have been shooting soccer for around a year and tried every permutation but eventually settled on Aperture priority and agree that 1/500th is a pretty much a minimum if you want to freeze fast action.
I`ve only recently aquired a 70-200 f2.8 which helps enormously in keeping my ISO at reasonable levels.
However, I have used my Sigma 135 to 400mm regularly which is 5.6 at 400mm and upped the ISO accordingly with decent results.

Even on sunny days, I keep the aperture wide open as it gives me very fast shutter speeds which helps in obtaining the sharpest images.

Thanks to all. I'm confused as ever which means I'll shoot 400+ jpegs L/Fine during 2 (or hopefully more soccer games today, depending on how my kids' teams play) and I'll be experimenting with all your advice. Just not at the same time. Thanks again.
