these photos i see are all too cliche. i feel that creativity isn't welcomed here. i looked at past challenges and see the same old thing.

You just haven't looked enough, or hard enough.

Disgruntled photog. Your first shot didn't do well not because it was creative, but because a) you can barely see what it is and b) you cropped your whole face out practically. What IS the aesthetic merit here? Otherwise, what are you on about?

You will find the creative ones, but there by the 5's or 6's. I often see creative and excellent images overlooked.

i have been here a long time and i still see the same thing. so don't tell me that i didn't look hard enough

Your Self Portrait photo doesn't even look like a photo. Looks like a coping machine print.

8 days? And, no, you didn't look hard enough at all. Or, if you did, you fail to recognize creativity when it slaps you round the face.

Your profile shows that you have been a registered user for all of 9 days.

Perhaps you should give it some more time and see whats really going on here.

Then let's see your best -- teach us!! It's pretty easy to make a remark like this while sitting there watching the site from afar...

just because i make a statement saying i see the same thing all the time, doesn't mean i do the best work. all i was saying is i see the same thing over again.

so before you get on my case realize this: don't take things too seriously

So? If you don't like what you see, move along. I don't go to Safeway and complain that their futon section sucks...

there's no point in jumping on a guy for making a statement like this...there actually is some merit to what he is saying, but that's how dpc is and probably how it will always be, which has been great so far

I thought that sunsets were boring until I started to take them. They are a lot harder then you think. And same goes for macro and flower shots. It takes the right amount of light to get it just right. It is not just click and ta da...it takes skill. Before you achieve that skill you must practice and that is what people are doing here. Practicing and getting better. Ya some complain but most are going to achieve. You can too. Take your camera and lets see some shot of sunsets, macros, and flowers. I dare ya!

I honestly just don't appreciate a statement like this from someone who admits to sitting on the sidelines for a year while posting just one shot. I can't imagine it's a coincidence that his first shot scored low and then he suddenly decided to post a rant about the overall quality of the site being poor, which I would argue adamantly against.

I also get ticked at people sitting behind me at football games who scream and yell at the coach, although I'm certain they have never played nor coached a game in their lives...

Sorry... it's late and I'm cranky... :P

agreed...i'm just seeing a lot higher level of animosity towards people on dpc in general lately and i think it sucks. let's just get on with it and have a good time...this isn't a new phenomenon of someone having a complaint like this

Agreed, lots of animosity. Come on, the poor guy just made a remark - we are a wonderful bunch of people and we have a nice site. Lets just welcome the new guy, I am sure he will enjoy being part of our site. If we carry on like this we will probably scare him off, so lets be nice to him!

You made a statement that you may or may not wish to retract. I found this site just a about a month ago, found it to be loaded with all kinds of folks and all with very different talents. you sir had an idea that worked for some and not for others. you were challenged! you chose to step in the ring and you did so knowing that failure was possible. a race lost. And if you check the folks responding they to at one time or another did not fair well in a challenge. They did as most good creative souls do and came at it again. you can do the same. Have fun! I got booted because of my creative attempt at the portrait challenge, but picked up dusted off and came back at it....do the same. lighten up and have a good time.

I think it is fair to ask watermelon junkie whether he seriously considers an over-contrasted (or perhaps negative) image of half a face creative? This is stuff I am sure nearly all of us have done in the earliest parts of our photographic careers. I have scores of juvenilia stored on CDs that I really should clean out.

Obviously I have made MY opinion of the shot clear (an opinion that seems shared by the voters), but it still remains a serious question, that I hope will be answered in as full a way as possible.

Creativity is great, we love it here. Your shot isn't really creative at all, it's something every new user to Photoshop does within a week after they purchase the application and start experimenting. You shouldn't be angry about it and see the others are uncreative, instead try making a creative shot within in the guidelines of the website, and go from there.

And if you don't like the guildlines (ie. The "uncreative" part I guess you're talking about), then try your hand at some of sites that do allow it. I've seen the entries on those sites and I guarantee you that your shot would NOT be considered "creative" on those sites either. :) Learn to walk before you run. :)

my opinion:

there is a lot of stuff on dpc that is creative, but, overall, it's 'mainstream creative,' not 'art school creative', it doesn't really explore the darker or the more abstract side of things as much as it's pretty wholesome and geared towards things that are pretty.

Partly this is a commercial necessity, and partly it's driven by the constituency of the site.

and that's fine - it is what it is :).

There are always some pics that are more 'arty'in any given challenge. they may not always be embraced by the mainstream voter. so the trick here, or the 'challenge' is to create a pic that succeeds within these parameters while still satisfying your urge to create something satisfying.

keep trying, and don't get too frustrated, i've been submitting for over a year :P

watermelon dude is right. some days I think i'm going to barf the next time i see a picture of a flower, a kid, a kitten, or any combination of the three. i have actually been known to vote down cliche shots and shots that rely on the title to make them fit in the challenge.

this is NOT a creative site. it's mainstream. that goes hand-in-hand with a "challenge" because people are going to shoot what they think will have MASS appeal, which leads to a creativity dilution.

but, what are ya gonna do....
