I am looking to buy a new camera since I haven't been able to post photos because I was using my roommate's (nborton) camera at the time and sadly (not really) we both graduated. So now I've narrowed my search down to these two cameras and am wondering if people have seen these advertised at or around $500 and if anyone has any comparison knowledge they would like to share. Thanks

I voted for the Nikon 4500. I've had mine since July - taken 5000+ photos. The 4500 is very sturdy and I love the twist.

Hi Achiral -- those are both great cameras. I have a Coolpix 995 (and a friend with the Coolpix 4500) and my brother has the Canon G2. I love the twist body on my Coolpix because it really makes it easy to change your perspective (especially nice when taking macros). The other big plus with the Nikon Coolpix line is the huge selection of add-on lens and filters that are available. Of course you can also add lens to the Canon G2, but G2 extras seem to be a little more difficult to find. Another plus that the G2 has is the incredible battery -- it supplies power for a very long time between charges. Both of your choices will take incredible photos, so you can't really make a bad decision. If you can, stop by a Best Buy or similar store that will let you hold each camera to see how they feel to you.

My girlfriend shoots with the G2 and it does take great pics. It has the feel of a 35mm camera as opposed to the 4500. I have the 4500 myself and love it. I had the same debate when I was looking for a camera.. G2 or 4500? I chose the 4500 because of the 4X optical zoom (the G2 has a 3X) and the swivel. I also wanted something a little moe compact for my tarvels. And add ons were also important.

So there ya go!

Either of them will give you good pictures. I almost bought
the Nikon until I held it in my hands. I really didn't like how
it felt and liked the G2 more. It simply felt more like a camera
than the twist body Nikon.

My only point is it is worth actually trying one out 'in person' before
you make up your mind.

Definitely looks like a great deal! ... though the G2 cult will be disappointed to not have a new member...

Maybe you should have waited on the new camera section of dpc2. Did you see all the great G2 pictures? (Cool feature btw, Drew. Is there any way to view more photos taken with the cam or do u have to look up individual users?)

BTW, I really like my camera and haven't had any trouble finding lenses or filters (money is the issue).
Have fun with your camera!

Try a Site called Steves digicam. He gives good honest reviews on both these cameras and you can do a side by side comparision. I chose the G2 on the strength of the reputation that Cannon lenses have had for years. Battery life was also a clincher and it felt more like a analogue camera in the hand than the coolpix.
