Welcome Jeanne, I have learned a lot since I joined this site, and you will too; the first thing I recommend is to take a lot of pictures and submit in the challenges, take the advice given to you in the challenges through the comments, and specially read the tutorials in the "Learn" menu

if you ahve a specific question... ask in the forum...read the forums to figure out who might answer it best and ignore the members who just like to pull peoples chains.....

Check the time and date on your camera, read the rules, and have fun shooting!

Size does matter!!!

a lot of newbies fall into the trap of posting a tiny image. Aim for 550 at the longest length minimum but everyone will love you if you hit that 640 max. Also, if you havent used it before, check out the save for web option in photoshop to keep under the 150k limit.

Welcome to the insanity. Look out for Joey, he pulls some scary faces.

after spending one year here I've only learned one thing... sell your camera and take up knitting..

after a while here people will tell you to buy a bigger camera, then some big lenses, and flashes, and filters, and, and, and... and then it's the get together's, you'll have to travel all over the world to see other DPCer's
youll spend most of your time taking pictures, the rest will be wasted here on the forums..
you won't even notice when your family moves away and sells the house with you in it..
it's a hell on earth.. but for some strange reason we still love it..

it's an addiction, like heroin.. only harder to beat..

so if you don't quit now, you're stuck with us...

WELCOME TO HELL..... hope you'll enjoy the stay :)

My only advice would be to take a lot of pictures, get to know your camera, and learn everything you can from the forums, comments on your pictures, and sending private messages to successful/professional members. There's a lot of knowledge in this club...more than any other club I've been part of. After you get the feel for how things work (there are a lot of quirky people/voters) and how people vote, I would take a step back, not enter every single challenge, and really try to come up with some winning photos.

when you submit to a challenge and you get some comments on your image that are not so pleasing, please dont take them personal. Comments can be harsh and cruel around here. Im not trying to scare you, im just prepairng you.

you will receive some good comments as well

welcome to your new addiction and good luck

Jmor... welcome!

Take lots and lots of pictures of things you like.

Study and copy what the people that get the high scores do to their images of subjects that you like. When you master that then ignore what everyone else does and do your own thing! LOL
