I was fortunate enough to receive a windfall in the form of a Quantaray 2x teleconverter from DPCer dahkota earlier this week. I put it to good use at the Ft. Worth Zoo yesterday and I'm really happy with the results. I know the sharpness and contrast suffer a bit, and I was in deep shade anyway, but I still love it (since I'm not a working pro or selling prints of the stuff, it suits me just fine!). So thank you so much Courtenay, and I promise to give it a good workout regularly! :)

edit: had to add one more!

Wow. Those are terrific shots all! How far from the animals were you?

By the way, do you use the Quantaray with a telefoto lens, or is it itself a telefoto lens?

Well those are knockout shots and no mistake!

Thanks! I'm not a good judge of distance at all....they about midways into their enclosure, and I was right at the fence...I had my 75-300 IS USM on with the 2x converter. 600mm sure does make it look like I was a lot closer. ;)

Tripod mostly... the shade and the teleconverter made for nearly all my shots being less than 1/60, most 1/40 and 1/30.

Remote?or delay shutter release?

Neither... just clicking away on the ol' shutter as usual. :)

I guess I should bring a tripod next visit to the zoo on Wednesday then.

It looks good to me. Incredible sharpness and contrast.

Incredible shots Laurie. I love the first one with the cub in her mouth, but they are all outstanding.

Just curious, how do you get pictures into a thread (such as these) that are not in your portfolio?
10/30/2005 05:53:53 PM · #18
yeah, they are a little soft but I actually think they might be better if you hadn't sharpened them so much. Who cares though, with completely awesome photos like these! My favorite would be the one with the mother picking up the cub in the floor except for that darn stump...stupid stump stupid stumps always getting in the way. Other than that they are all my favorites. Lucky you, dahkota is a fantastic person ain't she?

Your shots are great, but I can sense myself developing a whole new personality disorder - zoo envy.

I posted the link from my smugmug account using the Image tag... click the third little icon in the window where you type your message and put the link to your url/location where the image is hosted. :)

Thanks y'all. I agree, JPR, about the sharpening...it might be a little much. I will revisit editing these this week and see if I get anything better the 2nd time around.

The zoos in Fort Worth and Tyler are absolutely first-rate, and the renovations at the Dallas Zoo hopefully will bring them up to par. I adore shooting at zoos!

Wonderful, first rate work! You did put that TC to good use, and these are excellent shots. My favorite is the first with the cub.

These arereally nice, Laurie. I'd agree they may be TOO sharp, so try dialling it back a tad and see how that sits.

Great stuff Laurie. You faired much better than I. Here are just a few of the ones that worked out for me. I should have upped my ISO so I could get a faster shutter speed, as most of mine had motion blur.

You're welcome Laurie. Glad someone could put it too use - it seemed such a waste to leave it in my old camera bag. And it didn't work half as well for me as it does for you!

Glad you put that in there before we had any goat-sacrificing rumors to contend with! ;)

You got some GREAT shots. I reckon that little ol' Nikon does a pretty good job for you.
