I am using Adobe Photoshop 6 (self-taught mostly)and I have a background layer that I painted green, another layer that has a drawing I did sort of freehand, then I have a couple of different layers that have with text. I flatten all the layers and it looks fine on my computer. I upload it to my website, (Smugmug) and everything is surrounded by ugly lumps (appears to be impressions of the text and picture, making the background look lumpy instead of smooth. Anybody know what I am doing wrong? Am I missing a secret step to making this appear correct?

Okay, but it will take a minute to get it going, my membership expired(bummer) and I have to see if I still have the thing on my site. i got so frustrated, I turned the background black so it wouldn't be visible.

Ok, here it is. Please excuse any mess you find here, It's a work in progress. P.S. If you want to check out some of the photos there and give me a quick comment too, that would be nice. Thanks.

wow, well first of all, I would say that you have some major jpeg compression going on there. Try using less compression. Also, just thought I would say that the fox looks pretty bad. You might actually go to your local zoo and actually take a picture of a fox. It would look better than hand drawing it. just my opinion.

Thanks drake, yeh, fox is getting suckier by the minute(if that's a word) I believe I tried saving it at better setting, but it didn't seem to help. Or maybe I just don't know how to do it with less compression, little tutorial here might help.

jpeg compression artifacts--the bumpyness--are most visable in solid areas of color at high compression.

high compression = low quality = small file size
low compression = higher quality = larger file size

for web images that have large solid colors, if you can't get the quality/size ratio to where you need it, try using a GIF or a PNG which do better compressing images with large blocks of solid color.

800 pixels wide, 19.1 Kb = major compression, artifacts guaranteed in jpg. Try making a gif out of it. I also agree with what fstopopen says; this doesn't look good at all as a design. It appears to have been "drawn" with MS Paint or something. You can find free clipart of animals galore on the web and work witht hat...

You have so few colors, might I suggest .gif, this would cut down on the file size.

Very good to know. Thank you. Looks I need to start from scratch.

also, check out photoshops "save for web" feature, which will allow you to preview the different settings.

Fox was actually done in Photoshop(first attempt) I looked for some drawings before I tried it and couldn't find any that appealed to me. How do you draw with this program without it looking so crappy? Does it have anything to do rasterizing or rendering ( alien words to me)? Or is there a better way to draw?
I don't have a zoo with a fox anywhere near me and it feels wrong to use another photographers photo on my website to promote my photography. ( I am not talking about stealing it by the way,if anyone misreads this, I would of course buy the rights, but I mean if I am a photographer,it's kind of sad if I can't put my own photo up. LOL

Didn't show up as a problem in "save to web". The gif idea sounds good. My thanks to you all.

Drawing in photoshop is really difficult. Some guys can do it , not me. Illustrator is better prog for dawning but with a very steep learning curve. I believe Corel Draw is very good too. Maybe scanning in a drawing of your fox into Photoshop would work better.

Here's two foxes from CorelDraw clipart, saved as GIF; note only 10.1 Kb...

foxes

Let me know if I can help with this...

also....you don't even have to show a whole fox. snout and tail. an outline. a gesture. an idea. a foxlike impression.

a lot of graphic design fails--IMHO--when nothing is left to the imagination.
