How many "water droplet" shots do you think we'll get in this one? Not that I mind them...
This should be a pretty cool challenge.

Dare I do another blur?
I thought "What" was the perfect challenge for a motion blur abstract.
Isn't "what?" what most abstracts are about?
Lovely score on that one--18th percentile. My third lowest. And a special note about that one too: it's not a reflection at all. It's all done with motion blur. Doesn't it look like a reflection?
Well, in any case, perhaps this isn't my best one, but I thought it looked very painterly, and not desrving of a 4.5 score!
So beware if going to the dark side for motion blur. ;)
In any case, I predict a stop motion water droplet will win 1st.

I'll probably have to go for the other challenge if I do any this go around, I can't manually adjust my shutter speed and not having that kind of control for a "shutter speed" challenge seems a waste.
Unless folks have an idea on how I can do a pseudo-manual shutter speed adjustment on an nearly fully automatic camera??

you can turn of the flash while taking a photo in a dimly lit space. that should at least allow the shutter to expose it for a few seconds. try it out. use a tripod :) |

you can also capture motion and blur the background by moving your camera along with the subject passing you by... |

I guess you haven't heard of my secret weapon :) Damn! I've never been so excited about a challenge that I've forgotten my scores in Grain and Light on White.

Just looked up your camera on olympusamerica.com, here is the basic manual check page 24. It tells you about the Night Scene function on your camera. It isn't the same as having manual control over it but may offer you some cool stuff.
You can also trick your camera into changing its settings, say you want to get a longer exposure but it is too bright out for what your camera will do...cover the lens some how, maybe hold a box over it, and press the shutter half way down and remove the box...you will have to continue holding the shutter down while removing the box so a little help would probably be needed or set the self timer first (always a good idea with long exposures anyway). Now the camera has adjusted the settings for a dark scene even though it's lighter out. You can also shine light on it to make it think it's brighter than it is for a shorter night exposure.
This site is about learning anyway so have fun with what you have. Good luck, can't wait to see what you come up with.

Perhaps you left the camera in the box, with the lid on??? |

No I used ISO 1600 with 1/2000 sec. shutter speed.

This is taken with an automatic camera too. I just didn't have the flash turned on. It may be on night mode too. I can't remember. But I thought this turned out pretty cool. I almoat entered it but figured my delicate psyche couldn't handle all of the comments I'd get. (hee hee hee) ;~p |

lets say the effect really came from something else, and not the shutterspeed. like what if you have a fairly low speed, but a flash is used freezing the action, rendering the shutterspeed kinda useless.
