I just wanted to share a comment that I just received for my Off-Center sumbission. The comment asked why my picture was off center! Excuse me......why is it off center!?!?!?! That's the theme of the challenge! I know that people have their criteria for voting but that's rediculous.

lol... Sorry, not laughing at you, just laughing because nothing surprises me anymore! I feel your pain...

LOL! I know you're not laughing at me. I couldn't believe it when I read the comment. Heck, I STILL can't believe it!

maybe they meant it was 'off-center' psychologically speaking. Like "wow, you're off-center, dude...you need therapy"?

He/she might have made that comment to a lot of photos to see how soon someone would start a comment-rant-thread. In that case, please do not feed the trolls. It could have also been an honest mistake about the challenge.

Or maybe you misread it and he/she was saying that your chosen subject just doen't work well with the off-center theme. This is how I feel about my own submission, actually.

I'm not so sure about that. The comment was very brief and didn't leave much room for interpretation. It was just flat weird.

That's pretty funny, but maybe their way of telling you that the subject you chose doesn't work well off center?? It's a stretch, but at least the comment doesn't seem SO silly if you think about it like that.

Maybe he meant off-center in the Swahili sense? I dunno. Them Swahili people are funny.
06/20/2003 05:17:10 PM · #10
Maybe it was a different question. Maybe they meant it like "What makes this photo off center?"
06/20/2003 05:19:50 PM · #11
I was thinking along same lines as heather

maybe he/ she was trying to say to you "is this photo off centre just for the sake of being off centre to be entered into the challenge or does the image content actually suit off centre - did you go out and look for a subject or idea that leant itself to the challenge or did you shoot whatever and just put it away from the centre?"

or he/ she could be a comments troll!

I see your point but I don't think that's it. I took the picture with the intention of being off center and judging by the score so did most people. It's not going to win any ribbons, but it has a decent score. Most commenters love it.

Siince i just got finished voting on alot of pictures and that was a comment i left on some i will bet it was me. I left the comment on pictures where being off center imho did nothing for the picture, it seemed like it was there for the requirement. This is the first time i voted on all the pictures and the last time. I have read enough threads whre people ask why u voted a specific way. I was trying to say why i voted a specific way. As with all art it is based solely upon my opinion. It not worth spending 2.5 hours commenting

Thanks for the clarification. The comment just seemed odd to ask why it was off center in an off center challenge. I understand your reasoning for the vote now and please don't be discouraged to vote in the future. Part of the fun of this site is checking your score and comments 1000 times a day, then complaining about them. It gives us something to do until the next challenge.

Then it's probably just a comment troll...
Remember all the tedious spongebob pants comments for a while?

Well. as one of the wise leaders of dpc one said...and I forget which one...they ask themselves WHY certain elements of a photo are the way they are or WHY they are in the photo at all or WHY is the camera angle such as it is and etc. Could it be this person could see no reason for the subject to be off center, that the off- centeredness did not add to the photo or that it was way far too off center to make sense to them.
Or, they could be just pulling your chain.

I will keep voting, i made a goal to vote on at least 75% of the competitions and by end of july compete in 50%. It just seems like a waiste of precious time to comment and get trashed even though i keep seeing forums asking for some kind of comment to understand what people thought of the pictures. What is done here is art and entirely based upon the beholder opinion. Nothing is a fact

The problem is you need to express yourself if you are going to say something like "why is this off centered" you need to express what you are trying to say. You expressed it well here you don't think being off centered was right for the photo, thats what your comment should have been. Although in your defense I have found out if I think I got a troll comment, I can simply respond to the comment and find out what the comment actually means.

I think it was the wording of the comment that the photographer found odd. I think you explained it VERY well, however, if you look at it out of text, it does seem a little odd. Nothing wrong with making comments at all. Even bad comments are good most of the time.
There have been only a couple times where a person has responded to my comments negatively, and I think why did I bother wasting my time to make this comment. It's like, if you didn't want other's views, why did you post it looking for other's views? I get irritated, then I can get over it by thinking "We all see things differently."

Shadow apologies if yours was the comment being referred to and was a real one. I did give your real meaning, as explained above, as one of my two interpretations!

I think whilst it's great to leave comments when you can that it is worthwhile just thinking about whether the brevity is so much that the meaning is lost or unfathomable to the recipient...

Sorry again to offend.

I knew who was being referred to when this thread started because I had received a similar comment. However, on mine, the comment was much easier to understand. After commenting more extensively on my picture, Shadow said "being off center adds nothing to the image," which I thought was both perceptive and accurate.

Keep up the comments, Shadow. Just try to make them as obvious as the one you left on mine!

I received a comment from shadow too.....
oh well....
