I'm sure this has been discussed before but I couldn't find the thread so here goes.
What is everyones take on off-brand batteries? They are certainly cheaper and some even claim to be "more powerful" but can the claims be trusted? Will they last as long and is there any chance that they will harm the camera?
If anyone has had good luck with a particular brand I'd love to hear it.

Thanks.

I've been using two SIDO batteries on my gripped 300D for 3 months now, and can't say i have anything to complain about. And i got them $25 for both shipped

I have a off name battery for my d70 and it lasts justas long if not longer than my nikon battery.

I bought a pair of cheap batteries for my 300D. Higher stated capacity, although I did no specific testing. They lasted a couple of months before dying, they simply ended up not holding much of a charge. No harm at all to the camera. Bought another pair that lasted pretty well. Much cheaper (ridiculously so) than the 'proper' Canon batteries. In fact, they were so cheap that premature failure did not even bother me.

ditto
My only complaint is that the generic is the tiniest bit larger than the Nikon battery & is a pain to get out of the camera.

My cheap ones work better or at least as good as my Canon one does. Here is a link to a reputable dealer that usually offers Buy 1, Get 1 Free and free shipping. :)

I got 2 ultra cheap ones off ebay. One worked once, the other is just as good as the canon. If i were to buy again i might try SterlingTek (search the web) as i hear only good about them.

Now then, there are two things to consider...if a battery does melt down and destroy your camera, you'll feel retty bad about trying to save $20 or $30 when it costs you $600-900 or more for a new camera. Small chance of that happening (in fact, i have never heard of it so far) but i did recently read an article (in Newsweek i think) about how cheap knock off batteries are now coming in teo hte US to fit lots of products, and whileht epackage may say LiIon the batter is NOT that and can (and has) caused fires, product shorts, charging fires, etc.

Rare, but possible and apparently getting more possible.

I have the original canon and two cheap 'no-brand' batteries. All three are indestiguishable as far as I can see. I've had all three for over a year now without any problems.

I have 2 Nikon batteries and 1 made by Digital Concepts. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if the plastic casing of the Digital Concepts one weren't grey (the Nikons are black). It seems to work just like the Nikon ones. No complaints here. I would have gotten another off brand one instead of the 2nd Nikon, but I needed it too soon for online ordering and the local Ritz only had the overpriced Nikons.
