Ok during hurricane season I watch cnn because I have a condo out side of tampa on a beautiful island called anna maria island.

So with wilma you can guess im sweating a bit... but I tuned intoday
and there is a hostage situation in a office building
as its going on the cnn cameras are on swat... I think thats pretty stupid if the person in the building has a tv on he knows where they are comin from... Same with military operations around the world. Who needs a spy just watch cnn

Ok i might get flamed for this but oh well
Just my thoughts

I think Saddam Hussein said that during the first "gulf war" he got more info about American-military movements from watching CNN than from any other source.

That's why we should all watch FOX NEWS instead. They're very patriotic

but is it just me who thinks that cnn should be a little more discrete
like come on now..

Like wait to break the story not everything has to be live as it happens
lol If i was a nation wanting to attack the states or if the states was attackin the country ok look the bombers just took off we can send our jets now...

Im surprised it hasnt bit them in the ass yet
and if it does they wont get blamed for
1 death

As a journalist, I understand "quite well, I'd think" why things are evolving this way. There's so much info "out there" that in order to get noticed, one doesn't need to be "correct" and "responsible," but being loud and being the first to be loud does help.

Let's face it...the same way that video killed radio, the net is killing video. And if one's primary gig is video based, then one's scrambling for sensationalistic and at times crappy "news."

I suspect that when these things are going on that they cut the power to the house and stuff like that. At least they do in the movies.. :) Nothing stopping "phoning a friend" though! :)

I agree, more discretion needs to be shown. I would rather see Janet Jackson's nipple than someone getting killed on the evening news any day of the week! My two cents.

Cheers,

I really hope that was a joke.

Classic American media! All they worry about is being the first to break the story, and try to capture as much death and despair as possible. Its really sad to watch the news in our country b/c it makes you think that all we do is hurt each other and other countries. There really are a lot of great people in our country, who do great things for one each other and around the world.

:(

The news media is supposed to be the "fourth branch of government," and act as watchdogs. However, they certainly are not doing their collective jobs. You're probably just getting a very small fraction of what's happening in the world and in the US. They go into very little depth about what they do report. The reason, as in your words that there is very little "happy stories" on the news is because there is very little good coming out of the government and our leaders. Just look out how most of the major news outlets were mere mouthpieces for the Bush administration regarding the war in Iraq. Would you rather have the news concentrate on smiley faced happy news to the under detriment of reporting the real news?

We as consumers of news need to be demanding that the news outlets do their jobs!

A fairly interesting article on the media -- Court Rules that Media Can Legally Lie.

Well said, but I think the problem is bigger than this. It's not just that the net is killing video...the problem is that 'entertainment' is killing 'relevance' and 'truth'.

If CNN can show you a snippet of 'reality tv' as it happens, they'll do it. If Wolf Blitzer can get some General to estimate that some death toll is 'over 10,000', you'll see it scrolling along the ticker at the bottom of the screen in seconds. If FOXNews can get someone who is being interviewed to be more dramatic in describing a situation, they'll coach them to do it before they go live.

It's disgusting.

Funny thing I see is that no one has mentioned the "Big Three" networks. Shows ya, us folks are getting it finally. Most news media have an agenda, but no one is listening anymore. The Internet has change news for ever. Yaaaaaaa.

Next thing you know they will allow "coaching" solders what to ask the big cheese when asked for questions they might have - oh wait, too slow :-)

Robs - LOL!

That whole thing was a joke wasn't it? I can't believe the president of our country isn't intelligent enough to be able to answer non-scripted questions! These soldiers are putting their lives on the line every day and they can't ask their own questions of the person who is responsible for sending them to foreign lands to fight.

.....but didn't FOX's, Geraldo Rivera once draw a map in the sand, revealing the position of the platoon he was embedded with?

Actually he was discreet, if I recall correctly. He did whisper, while giving his report.

"Most news media have an agenda"

Yes, and that agenda would be to sell more cars, more shaving cream, service to AOL, Viagra....

Truth and stories of any pertinence are in direct conflict of sales because the truth ain't pretty and relevant things aren't sexy, light and upbeat.

but Paris Hilton is...

if nobody watched it they wouldn't have it on the air. the fact is the american public is obsesed with whatever is shown on the television, and to say that the net is killing video, i think, is a bit of stretch.

being discreet in situations where peoples lives are at stake, I would agree, is a solid idea.
