Interesting challenge with a lot of opinions on what it meant. Here are a few I felt were under rated in this challenge.

Without disparaging any of the top ones, I gotta say that I can't imagine anyone would rank them in the order they ended up. This may be true of most challenges, but that one seems WAY outta wack, IMO.

1 : not animate: a : not endowed with life or spirit b : lacking consciousness or power of motion
2 : not animated or lively : DULL

Sums it up pretty much :) I agree with ken on this one. Just my opinion of course.

:) I used a leaf, so I guess there's a gray area there. I considered inanimate more unable to move on it's own. (more like definition "b") I mean, technically, a tree or leaf may be "alive" (although mine were detached from the tree, so I suppose you'd call them not alive.) Anyway, I would consider a tree an inanimate subject.

Too bad you used a French title - I had no idea what it said, I just thought you had something stuck in your throat. ;-)

As I mentioned in your photo...

This is an excellent image Marc. Nothing to be ashamed of. I think what this image lacked was a captivating title. Without your comments, I wouldn't have realized what you were trying to convey here.

I was trying to be creative. Oops. My original title was "The Court Defends Their King." Well, something along those lines.

How about "Defense"

The unfortunate part lies in the fact that unless one knows the rudiments of the game of chess, the mere use of a title would do little if anything to lend personification to this photo.

If one does know the game... the title, be it defence or echec is superflous, and the personification is readily discernable.

I for one liked this photo, and scored it highly.

I was originally thinking os submitting something like this:

..."Soylent Green"

But I don't think voters would get the challenge connection, even though SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!! IT'S PEOPLE!!!

Thanks for the compliment Henry. I barely scraped a 6 on this challenge. I was hoping that this would do better but I can't complain. This was such a fun shoot to take. While everyone was taking snapshots of the sunset and the Golden Gate Bridge, I actually jumped over the railing to have a lower angle to shoot this viewer. People probably thought I was nuts for not appreciating the sunset :) People seemed to like the title too and I think it's pretty witty. Thanks again.

Well, I had some people who just didn't get mine I guess...but it was nice to see how many folks actually did get and appreciate it. I've used this image for one of my scripture pictures, and I think that turned out okay as well.

Wow. Thanks.
To me, if I were an umbrella, and I looked like this, I would feel meloncholy and despondent. Maybe tired and useless. Anyway. I was trying to give human feelings/attitudes/descriptions to something that was not human. At least that is the way I taught it in the High School English class.
