Photography Competitions - DPChallenge Forums

Good evening, my dear DPChallenge chums!

I have started a page designed to keep track of photography competitions. The idea is that people can go to one single web site to keep an overview of when the various deadlines for submission are, allowing them to keep an overview and to participate in more competitions.

The page is available here, but contains but a limited number of competitions so far.

The question, then:

- is if anybody else knows of any photography competitions?
- is there a need for a service like the one I am offering?

I would say definitely. I for one would love to have ready access to a list of competitions to choose from, without having to dredge through the internet or photo magazines to get to them. I seem to recall one service on the web that charged for access to a huge list of photo competitions. Perhaps you could go into 'competition' with them :)

I certainly hope so - I am not planning to charge for my service in any case (information is free, or something).

Is it only meant for contests with prizes, or also for challenge-sites like DPC?

A few I can think of are:

Well, there is a section for ongoing competitions. I cannot see why I shouldn't add challenges as well.

Do you want just major ones or any of them? Are you looking for anything that says "photo contest"? Is a competition different than a contest?

Olympus has a contest for Olympus users for every season. I entered some in the spring contest, one being my paperclip picture and my symmetry picture

The Kim Komando radio show just ended a contest monday at noon. First prize was $2500 !! Winners will be announced june 21. there are also 17 other prizes of $250. I just found out about it Sunday, the day before it ended.

I know of a couple other smaller local ones too. Do you want stuff like that or not? I know there are some locals (Michigan people) on the site that might want to know. My biggest question though is a competition different than a contest. Good luck with the list. - Bob

I don't know. Not really, I suppose. I am interested in anything where pictures go head-to-head with each other...

As for local contetsts; Sure! When you add it to the calendar, you might want to put (michigan) front of the title, so people not from michigan don't have to waste their time.. But I am all for local competitions as well.

Shar - You say "head to head" with each other, does that mean like an elimination type competition like a tournament, or a voting/rating type like we have here at dpc? I'm still not clear...

Fred Miranda Forums has weekly and monthly challenges with prizes for some competetions.

The prospect of a monetary or any other kind of prize always seems to force people to push more to achieve a better photo ... because we are all cynical fools and want something to brag about :D

Head to head means some form of competition. Here at DPC our pictures compete with each other, and is therefore interesting to my project. I guess you can say anything that gives a reward of some kind. Here on DPC the reward is virtual (ribbons and respect, praise, and world domination), while other competitions have less virtual prizes (money, camera gear, travels and world domination)

You get the drift.

I have been receiving quite a bit of feedback on this, both by DPCmessages and emails, and several people have added competitions to the listing already. Just wanted to say thanks everybody - both for the help and support.

I think this is a good thing to do. I remember looking for something similar about a year ago and not finding anything that was up to date or still active.

I put them here just in case you couldn't get at them right away. The competitions are all international, but on your site I put them in the USA category. Maybe you could put them in both categories, or start an international one. I thought you might want to know that.

Excellent.. I knew I could trust the DPC community to come up with some excellent stuff!

I am currently updating the listing with all the suggested competitions, and I added a "worldwide" competitions calendar as well as the UK and USA ones.
