You have the chance to go anywhere in the continental US for a weekend. Where would you go? Why?

I'm thinking about doing a weekend (fly Friday, mill about Saturday and Sunday morning, return Sunday night) getaway somewhere and I'm trying to find out about things I may not know about, this is the chance to let me (and everyone else) know about what we really should know about. Photographically interesting is always good, but everywhere can be photographically interesting.

If you've got the money, Vegas is always nice! :P
If you want warm weather, the lowcountry of South Carolina and Southern Georgia are very nice.
Ummm...Wormsloe Plantation in Savannah, GA, is supposed to be real nice, and I know that Savannah is beautiful, plus it's only a hop, skip, and a jump up to Charleston, SC.
(In Charleston there's the SC Aquarium, Patriot's Point Museum (USS Yorktown), and Fort Sumter, plus The Battery, the old Slave Market, and lots of other great places.)
Lots of beautiful, relatively inexpensive, and historic places to visit in both Savannah and Charleston. Plus you're close to the beach (it's maybe a little cool for swimming, but still pretty - and no crowds this time of year!). The fact that it's the "off" season means that hotels are CHEAP this time of year.

Thanks for the suggestions gals and guy. Vegas is on the to-do list for next month (a week-long perusal of big city life), lots to see and do there!

Sara - That all sounds great. My brother lives on St Simons Island, I've been down there and been to Atlanta, I liked both. Never been to SC, that sounds uber-cool too!

Shannon - I never heard about Assateague, that sounds great!

Great suggestions, anyone else??

Ive never been to the mainland USA but I know Hawaii is super I really enjoyed all the islands but Mauii was by far my favorite. The big island has an active volcano on it been spurting since 1974.

Vegas is too deadly for me to go Ide be a poor man in seconds.

Calafornia has a ring to it

and I like the sound of Texas too.

one day one day.... one... day. *falls back to sleep*

If you're planning on going this coming up weekend or soon....might wanna try someplace with some foliage.

And next year after New Orleans gets back on its feet....awesome place to go down in the french quarters. We stayed in the garden district and rode the trolley down to the french quarters.....great scenery, atmosphere and to die for food!!

Glad to see the Las Vegas shot, the hubby and I are going there for a romantic weekend in December, I'm looking forward to it! Now I know where to go to get a shot of the skyline.

If you're talking about doing this real soon, Michigan (or any northern state) is beautiful this time of year! But hurry, the fall colors are fleeting!

Pre-sleep summary:

Vegas
South Carolina / Georgia
Assateague Island
Vegas
Vegas Baby!
Hawaii/Vegas/california/texas
Jacksonville
Sedona
St Augustine
Foliage Laden Area / New Orleans next year

Excellent everyone, excellent!!! I love these choices!

My timeframe: late November/early December, if that helps with ideas.

I live in the UP and the colors are peaking right now! Very beautiful out there :)

Edit to note: Vegas is a trip for the first week of November. The weekender I'm talking about is in addition to that, kind of a perk/treat just for being alive.

If it could be anywhere.. North Shore Oahu .. surf is starting to get bigger now.

Utah for the red rocks as well.

ultimate .. Kauai.. Sooo lush and still fairly traditional :)

Back to the dreaming.....

** Edit ** having said all of that.. I was thinking about heading to San Fran for a few days .. just cuz. :)

San Francisco, California!

I just returned from another visit to Maine. Leaves are mostly yellows and orange but still beautiful. They aren't peak yet either. Acadia is a great place to shoot. Lots of camera groups were out while I was there.

For a weekend...

Bar Harbor/Acadia, Maine
The Virginias have beautiful mountains, waterfalls, and some mills
Outer Banks (I've never been but would love to shoot the lighthouses)
Upstate NY ('course I'm partial :-D)
NYC - 'cuz there's just no bad time to visit.

Seeing you only have limited time, I would find someplace condensed so you don't have to spend time driving around for hours. That means someplace close to an airport as well. A day and a half isn't much time...and unless I had free air miles I wouldn't think it'd be worth the cost of the tickets...? imho

Continental, USA, then my recommendations would consist of:

San Francisco, CA
Roanoke, VA (you'd be surprised...)
Nashville, TN (again, you'd be surprised...)
NYC, NY
Raleigh/Durham, NC
Canaan Valley, WV
Atlanta, GA
Las Vegas, NV
Jackson Hole, WY
Black Hills, SD
Mesa, AZ
Santa Barbara, CA

(Those would be my recommendations...) LOL
