Ok most of us have heard that canon has a pro lens series called the "L lenses"

but WHO makes the glass for the L lens???

you might be suprised, its NOT Canon

Well, does the L stand for Leica?

Nope

It's actually not surprising at all. Very few companies make their own raw materials. Apple doesn't make LCD screens or flash memory, they buy them from appropriate manufacturers and build iPods.

There are a few companies in the world who manufacturer glass for high quality optics, one of whom is Corning in NY. So, my guess is Corning, but there are many other possibilites.

Some say L stands for "Low Distortion" - achieved by the UD lens elements found in these lenses. But, the true answer is probably the one in Canon's Lens Work III Book - "L" is for "Luxury".

From Wikipedia, it has to be one of these:

Carl Zeiss
Cooke
Fujinon
Nikon (large-format lenses)
Rodenstock
Schneider Kreuznach
Sigma
Tamron
Tokina

Since Canon and Minolta are not listed, does that mean that both outsource their lenses?

Nikon?
Just the guy that put his initial on it had a lisp...

Could be on this list.

I doubt that Tamron, Leica, Zeiss, etc., make their own glass. Ditto Hoya. Those companies make lenses. They almost certainly buy their glass from a glass manufacturer.

No, he said "high quality."

Meade definitely does not manufacture glass.
