This Friday Im going to Niagara Falls for the first time. Friday night there will be a fireworks display so Im gonna get some pics of that and of course the falls.

There looks like there are some nice parks in the area also.

I was wanting to know of any good spots some may know about for taking some good pics in that area. I will be there from Friday to Monday afternoon so I have just a few short days.

Thanks

James

I was there a few weeks ago. I went down on the "cave of the winds" tour. The entire hillside down there was COVERED with nesting seagulls. Now the hills are probably covered with gull chicks!

Since you'll be in the area, why not take in Niagara-on-the-Lake, home of the Shaw Festival.

There are lots of opportunities up there! If you happen to get there on a sunny day, which is probably unlikely given our weather lately, you'll be basically guaranteed to see a cool rainbow effect in the falls. I shot this from the Canadian side:

The weather is going to be great this weekend, so come on up! They are forecasting vivid sunshine for the next six days straight.

There are almost too many things to do and see in the area. It has been a world class tourist attraction for so many years.

I grew up in the Niagara region and when we were kids we would ride our bicycles down to the Falls to watch for silly tourists - often American with southern US licence plates with snow skis on the roof racks on a 32° C (90° F) in July. Too funny, and seen far too often.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a great suggestion with the Shaw Festival in full gear. Wine is a major crop in the area so if you enjoy the grape, you can visit charming wineries for tasting's and fun.

As well Niagara has the Casino, the nearby Welland canal for watching the Lakers and the Ocean ships lock-through, The Falls with all of its stuff (caves, boats, helicopter rides, standing at the hairy edge {an absolute must-see}, up in the observation tower or hotel rooftops for lunch), the many gardens and parks, the neat power generating station tour, and Marineland and Game Farm.

Why not drive over to Toronto and pay us a visit, we are just 90 minutes away from Niagara Falls. And, we have a great city to show you a great time too. This is the most multicultural place on the earth, so you find every kind of food and fun.

For example, the CHIN picnic is on this weekend too. CHIN is a local Italian radio station. The highlight is the Ms CHIN Bikini Contest.

No one has ever accused the Italians of being politically correct when it comes to beautiful women with next to no cloths on (see Martin Perreault's Playboy Magazine (DrJOnes) DPC submission for an example - yes, I know he is French, but he has the same great taste in women as the Italians do!). Have a great trip.

Ontario, your's to discover!

Thanks for the tips on the great places there. Yes i have been watching the weather and it looks to be better on Saturday than any other day I will be there.

Im primarily going to pratice my fireworks shots before the 4th of July here in the states. Plus the added benefit of taking in one spectular site I have never seen before.

Definitely take in Niagara-on-the-Lake and do the whole road from there down to the falls on the Niagara Parkway. There's a wee tiny chapel too on the west side of the parkway that will only hold about 6 people--worth a shot. The whirlpool, the Skylon Tower has fantastic views of the falls. If you go up, you'll get a free pass to go up a second time so try a day trip and a night trip when the falls--both American and the Canadian (the best ones!) are lit up in various colours.

Enjoy!

First of all - Niagara has the most fantastic butterfly enclosure. So if you like close up insect shots, put that on your list. Then whirlpool also has great photo ops, as does (of course) the Maid of the Mist tour (Bridal veil falls is great) and the falls themselves. Try for the afternoon light, to get the rainbows.
Anyway, here's a couple of pics from each of the above

bring a couple of ND filters to reduce the light and allows for more of a "water falling" shot, rather than freeze in the action shots.... it looks better (to me anyways).

awesome shots....hopefully I can get a few like that....

I have a ND filter for my 50mm lens(58mm same as my 707), but not for my 28-200 (62mm)or my 80-400(72mm), they are on order also and none of the local shops have any ND filters in a 62 or 72mm thread size

What you might want to try for ND filters on the larger lenses is the Cokin system. With that you only have to buy an adapter for each lense, one filter holder and one filter (P-series). The only drawback is the filters are acrylic or plastic as apposed to glass but you get maximum flexibility to position the filter anyway you feel like especially with the graduated ND filters. There's lots of choice there as well with different colours.
