Is this normal?

Yes, during the Jewish holidays. What are you thinking of buying?

I didn't realize they did that every year.

Was just browsing and was surprised. I lived in New York for 4 years and never saw any other business closed that much during the holidays. Guess I've never bought anything from them in October, heh.

I really like it that, they print their closed dates on the invoice if is upcoming to remind you.

Yeah, I emailed them about a Wein Safe Sync and about shipping one to Australia and I got an automated email back saying they were closed for holidays???? Sheesh!

Let it be known I am not anti-semitic but I find it ever so slightly disturbing that there aren't enough non-jewish employees to keep the business open during those holidays, what gives with that?

They might have plenty of employees but choose to close so that their employees can also rest or for other religious reasons.

I think it's cool that they take their faith serious enough to take what must be a pretty big financial hit.

Jewish law requires not only that you cannot transact business during certain holidays, but also that you cannot hire someone to transact business on your behalf during those days as well.

This is also why B&H cannot be open on Saturdays.

Wow that is interesting Terry. I used to work for a Jewish couple who own a chain of camera stores here in Canada, we not only worked year round but THEY also answered the phone with "Merry Christmas" instead of happy holidays.

Thanks for clearing that up, it gives me a whole new perspective on my former employers, and a new respect for B&H.

As with Christianity and many other faiths, there are various different branches of Judaism, each of which interprets various religious commandments somewhat differently, and each of which has different sets of traditions. While many are universal, some vary from one branch to another. Of course, there is also the fact that some individuals observe those laws and traditions more strictly than others.

I had friends in New York who called themselves "Completed Jews" they were Jews who decided Jesus really was the Messiah. I don't know what they did during holidays...heck maybe they got more holidays than anyone! :)

For what it's worth I would recommend checking out CANOGA CAMERA if you are looking for a reliable place to buy while b/h is closed. I've had good luck with them, they are highly rated and the prices are competitive.

Its cant really be much of a finacial hit because they all close. I would try that place out of LA.

I think it is Chic-fil-a (thank for the info) that was founded by a Christian that still follows the "no working on the sabbath" and no stores are open on Sunday. I try to follow that but it gets really hard. I think the world would be a lot happier place if we all took at least one day off and did nothing, no shopping, no work, just spent time with your family (of course with some families that in itself IS work). Just my opinion

Samys Camera is a very reputable local chain here in Los Angeles. I buy most of my stuff through them and they've been great. Got a package from them coming today as a matter of fact. :-)

If you check the posted schedule you'll see they're open many sporadic days in October, including Hallowe'en ... Trick or Treat!
