I understand pushing the boundaries a bit to fit in a good shot you took during the challenge when there is in deed at least a thin connection? But to those who entered these in the "coffee" challenge...why?

I mean, if there is in deed a connection to coffee could you please explain. If not, then you're better off posting them to the forums as submitting unrelated photos usually earns atrocious scores.

I'm just trying to see the "coffee" in any of these. (I mean, had it been a spoon instead of a fork I'd get it...)

They might be trying to make a point?

Why wouldn't there be a fork at a coffee shop?

The baseball appears to be out-of-bounds. I assume it got some good photograph points.

Well it got a lot more comments that what I'm getting for my Pride entry at the moment!! hehehe

The challenge was not Coffee. It was about what you would find at a Coffee Shop. It could be a image of a napkin or a cockroach. Did not have to be coffee.

Exactly. I even got dinged for submitting a picture with tea in it and I can't remember ever going into a coffee shop that didn't serve tea. I'm just saying that life is so much nicer when you're not confining yourself to such a tiny little box all the time. ;-)

I actually scored the fork pretty high. I thought it was simple and it's something found in a coffee shop.

The baseball is a good shot btw, but not related to coffee shops in my book. I did give it a 5 tho.

I think it's reasonable to expect the photo to create a connection in the viewers mind to the subject. Otherwise you should make them all free studies.

I actually talked to Harrison, who took the shot of the baseball. He misinterpreted the challenge as what are people would find hanging on the walls of a coffee shot as opposed to literally what is in it. People make mistakes...

My only solution to this is, if I simply cannot figure out a connection to the challenge, I consider that it's just possible that I'm too stupid to see the connection.

In that case, I rate the image on its merits in general, then deduct a point for either my or the shooter's stupidity.

(Did I say stupidity? I meant to say, "erroneous interpretation of the challenge!")

I guess if it's hanging on the wall in a coffee shop.....its in a coffee shop...........now is that out of the 'box' .....or...... was it in one?

This has got to be one of the funniest and best (and honest) threads we've had in a while! Thanks for all the responses! :-) I'll certainly be thinking about this thread when I'm trying to determine whether or not the latest photo meets the challenge requirements - LOL. :-)

What is a picture for?

I've been thinking about this for a little while because I'm trying to find a direction. My problem is that I like all kinds of pictures.

I think pictures generally either tell a story, with many things going on, or speak a simple and clear message. That simple message can contain more than one side, or contrasting elements, but it is characterized by something simple and clear.

Ineffective simple pictures speak unclearly. Ineffective story pictures contain elements which do not contribute to the story. That does not include things which may be hard to understand, but even things hard to connect should have a connection that can be derived either from an external story, the title of the picture or some element WITHIN THE PICTURE. An example is:

It is possible that a picture is taken that has things that many people would not understand, but there should be something there for at least the target audience to understand. You don't go showing all the beautifully lit nude pictures of your wife to some guy you meet on the bus, wrong audience. Audience consideration is pretty important too.

If a person takes a picture of something in a theme, either picture type is effective, but mostly we stick to the simple pictures. That is appropriate.

Because we are shooting for a theme though, we need to consider what the picture is saying. A baseball is saying "baseball". As a simple and clear picture, it does not connect with Coffee Shop at all. If it could be used as a story pic, we could get away with it by using something to tie it in via story. If it were the cover of a novel called the Coffee Shop, something in the novel would contain baseball elements. But in a challenge, there is no novel. So we move to the title. It's called Baseball. Still no connection to Coffee Shops. That leaves elements within the picture....

The same can be applied to the lizard and the trees in fog. There may be a connection, but it is the responsibility of the photographer to make it for us. There should at least be something there to tie it in.

If you were hired to take a set of portraits of someone and you just took a bunch of pictures of the light switch in their house, would they be happy? A story picture can have a single element, but this can be much harder to pull off effectively when there is no more story than the title.

Honestly, read the challenge description. If you don't understand it, ask someone, the forums are open to anyone. To say that you took a picture because you thought it is the sort of thing that might be hanging on a coffee shop IS a legitimate idea, but nothing in that picture told us that. Nothing in the title told us that. It is out of challenge.

It just shows how many asses there are out there in the word ass-ume. Rather then focusing on photography they were focusing on themselves.... LOL!

Of course I am not guiltless, but it nice to see that I was not part of 110 this time..... HAHAHhahHAHhaHHAaaaa.

OK, had my coffee! Now I'm really wired!!!

I figured a fork was easy to find in a coffee shop - so this one was OK by me.

And I figure that it would not me unheard of to see a potted plant in a coffee shop - then who knows what kind of critter you might find hiding there. So this one also passed muster.
