Can anyone tell me if this ok?

My D70 shoots RAW images at only 5mb on the Memory card. So I am putting 400 files on 2gb card when the original reading is 189. I have downloaded the firmware update and it now reads my card and shows the number of compressed RAW images available (400). When I transfer the files to my computer, their size is 5mb, however when I open them in Photoshop they expand to 17mb. Is this normal and am I loosing any quality in the compression?

That's normal. When photoshop opens the raw file, it extrapolates each channel into three. That's why it goes to 17 mb in the software. RAW uses no compression - it is every bit of the information generated by the CCD.

As for the files remaining number, they improved its ability dramatically in the firmware update which is why that now works.

Know Nikon also have compressed Raw format in the D2X (I don't know about other models). I've been in a Nikon workshop latly and they say there's no difference between the compressed and the uncompressed, at least optically. They confessed that some times, few, a minor degree of degradation may occur, but of no optical difference, meaning that you could'nt see differences even in large prints. But they did not find any pattern in the image loss, and they can not say why or when it will occur.
