Personally I wouldn't consider this an abstract. Digital art maybe?

Oh boy, my favorite category! I have lots of these, but some samples:

Subtle Camera movement:

Not so subtle camera movement:

And a natural abstract (cloud) in B&W:

And Neil you do have a lot of these, love the movement shots. What goes through your brain when you set these up? Do you see certain colors and know that you want to move the cam around with the shutter open. Or are you constantly moving the cam around and see what comes out?

Guess I'm asking do you see the abstract before you shoot it?

Andy

A couple of these might not be considered abstract by everyone, though :)

Awesome stuff Julia...hey I'm kinda curious...are you a fan of the Original "The Crow" with Brandon Lee? I was looking at the Tryptich gallery the other day and ran across your "It can't rain all the time" and thought to myself...self...isn't that what he said to the little girl. Man I love that movie.

Neil here's one for you...put the cam on a tripod and set the screen saver on your pewter to bezers and kick it off, turn out the lights and shoot at a long shutter and:

Do I see the movement based abstracts before I shoot them? Yes and no. I am usually trying for a planned effect. But having the notion of what you want, and getting close to it, takes a lot of trial and error. And sometimes, during that time, you get another effect you didn't plan. Sometimes you don't even notice that. Once and a while, I go back through my iterations, and find something wonderful and unexpected in there.

In other words, even if you know what you want to do, it takes a lot of trial and error to get these (often 50-100 shots). For example, I have a new camera motion I started working on last week. It produces a very nice spiral pattern with a (relatively) sharp area. Once I have the motion, it's like picking a lens to shoot: you see a subject with good color or form and you say, I'd like to see how that looks with my spiral motion. I've been trying it on a lot of subjects. When I find one that looks interesting, and the first couple of captures have potential, then I shoot permutations of it (sort of like bracketing, but involving degress of motion as well as settings changes).

BTW - thanks for asking. I've never really had to sit and write about "how" I do this, and it was an interesting exercise for me to try and explain!

I like abstracts.

I don't know if this is really an abstract, but since nobody ever knows what it is, I will call it an abstract!

Similar case to the one mentioned above...

Thanks, and yep, I love the original Crow movie. That is a line from the movie as well as the name of a song :)

Not as good as those already posted - some of the previous shots are just breathtaking.
