For lack of a better word to describe these photos, I'll call them "abstract art".

Fair warning, these are not "strict" out-of-the-camera photography. Rather, they are a hybrid of my photography with considerable texturization and modification. All base photos were taken with a Canon EOS 350D and EF 17-40mm F/4.0L. For anyone interested in obtaining the wide-screen wallpapers (free), go to //www.aboutimage.com/earthworks.zip to download the file (4.1MB).

Forgot to mention, if you come up with better titles than my unimaginative Wallpaper1, etc., post here. All titles will be considered!

Hi Dave,
These are fascinating images. I like the last (road) one the best, but you know I love road photos. Also love the asteroid-like image (No 6). This technique would also look awesome in city scenes. Super duper!

Cool images. As for titles, for wallpaper6.jpg (second one listed), how about "Energy" or something to that effect?

Dream landscape series is what comes to mind. Very nice set. Images are visually cohesive with the components of the muted colours and shadow as the medium and matrix. I see a pictorial representation more dominant than abstraction. Excellent work.

To me they are like Van Gogh does Grundge, so i would call the "Van Grundge"

Very interesting textures and images, Dave. I like them. Good work.

I think they are great and very well done. Did you mean to have the shape of the angel in the third one? Definately something I would buy and frame, if I was going to buy that sort of thing.

what's your workflow to arrive at these, aboutimage?

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. As for janbruder's question, here is the general workflow (in Photoshop CS2):

-Duplicate source layer, add noise (monochromatic), motion blur, reduce opacity, experiment with modes (I think "Multiply" was used in many).
-Add texture layer (I used some scratched glass and copper stock photography), reduce opacity, change mode to "Lighten" or "Overlay" (in most cases).
-Add additional texture layers, if needed. In some cases, textures were specifically only applied to sky or ground elements.
-Add imagery elements (such as the boy and the bird) from either my own or stock photography, add noise and/or motion blur.
-Add hue/saturation adjustment layer ("Colorize" on) to add sepia/ochre overtones.

That's it in a nutshell. The main thing is to keep the texture layers above all the other elements and the hue/sat layer on the very top.

You'd be amazed at what you can do to your own photos with this technique. Even stunningly beautiful pics can be turned into complete grunge ;-)

These remind me of watercolors or monoprints -- very nice use of digital editing effects. The textures and muted color palette work well with the subject matter.

Good news! Apple has accepted my artwork and is listing it under their "Hot Picks" download section! While it's probably not a big deal, it is kind of cool to get some mainstream (if you want to call Apple mainstream) recognition!!

The download is called "Earthworks Wallpaper" and is located here:
