This is my book cover in progress. It's a painting/collage of different material. The sky is basically a mix of words excerpted from the novel I'm writing. It's not the best work of art, but, as said before, it's still in progress. It has more to be done to it.
One of the things I'm looking for in the final piece is a grunge feel. I want it to look like it's been in a landfill for twenty years or in the gutter of the slums of a city. Something Joey Lawrence would create. Or something Chuck Palahniuk's reliant artists would concoct (something you might see from Fight Club, etc.).
If you want, take this photo and edit it in some way to your desire. I need some feedback. So, thanks in advance. =)

| What's the book about? Some general idea might inspire folks who would like to go photoshop mad on the pic. :) |

Hmm...good idea...
The book, Mind Basin, is about a young artist/philosopher who finds himself struggling to function properly in the society around him, where standards rule how a person should act and live and be, where compulsory schooling lobotomizes every student, where art is frowned upon and scarcely found, and fellow human beings live on with their mundane, unpassionate lives. Throughout the story, however, the main character comes in contact with two people, a film, and a book (of the same name) that inspires him to escape from where he is trapped, to rediscover life, and ultimately to find the basin - or center - of his being.

Sounds interesting!
Well here's my take... printed out pic and mangled paper... took pic of it... cropped, messed with sat, light/darkness, added some noise, smoothed.... generally messed with it....

just a try... I think the mountains need some texture too.
after seeing the attempt, I might first saturate the reds before doing the grunge effect |

Whoa...I really like the different takes on the cover. Really gives me some ideas.

I'm really surprised by your take. It's interesting. You took the landfill/city slum idea (I suppose). Crumbled, messy, semi-ripped, frayed paper defines one major part of the grunge I'm looking for.

Very harsh. It makes me want to get this project done. Your take really brings out the emptiness of the mountains. My idea for them was to collage images I've taken that have a dark/hopeless theme to the story, possibly covered in some kind of earthy finish.

Your take was the same idea I had; very dark and cruel. I like how it's framed by this inky, fringed, polluted cloud. Really gets grungy, even if it's a little on the dark side.
Now, if only all these awesome interpretations were forcibly smashed together to make one big, grungy book cover. =)

And today I showed my art teacher the takes on the cover and she was thrilled as much as I was. I pitched to her some of my ideas: filling the mountains with photographs, outlining the mountains, rubbing some form of black die or ink into the whole canvas and running lines and squiggles down from the top and up from the bottom, darkening the outside, and, if possible, brightening the lake water (for the holy oasis effect).
All of you have inspired me to continue with this. For that I am grateful.
So here's some extra information:
The canvas is 12x18 inches, which is twice the size of the 6x9 book that it'll be printed into. The canvas is actually a media board.
Today when I showed the different takes on the cover, I also printed out a number of my photographs that had some kind of emotional, hopeless nature.
And I spent the rest of the evening cutting and shaping the small photos into place. I stuck tape on the back and simply applied each one to the media board. As said before, it's a work in progress, so other ideas will add more onto this.
This is simply a small step in completion.
The cover
The people in the photos: There's one of my closest friend walking over the "Exit" on the abandoned school parking lot. There's another one of her holding a little erasure heart on the other side of a fence. The one at bottom is her behind the fence. There's one of my brother's girlfriend strolling down an empty road, one of my cousin's eye, and his older brother under a hoodie on - you guessed it - a ferris wheel, specifically the one in Navy Pier in Chicago. On the far left there's a photo of a stranger on a skateboard. At the top right is a photo of one of my buddies at the camp I went to. And, finally, there's the photo of myself right in the crook of the mountains.

I spent all day cutting out words from Cosmo Girl and YM and Coastal Living, then cutting ouch each letters and putting the A's, B's, C's, and so on into their piles. Mother helped, as did the little brother.
But the little brother only wanted to cut out the really big words, and I seemed to have those, but after I offered them to him he got fed up with cutting out words and decided to crawl in a crevice of the house and whisper to himself.
Mom said I got a lot of her random creativity from her. She said how at my age, she would spend hours in her room drawing funky designs (late 70's, early 80's the time was), and that her parents still have her art hanging on her old bedroom door. I've seen some of it, it's actually quite spectacular. I wonder now what my mother would be doing if she truly harnessed her artistic abilities. But anyway, cutting out words and letters from magazines must have brought her back. She said she felt inspired.
I should do this more often.
So, the cover is coming along, as is the novel.
I'm truly enjoying the process. It keeps me busy. And sometimes I even get to involve the family, which is even better.
The letters haven't been pasted on, so, it's still a rough draft as I'm chugging along on this.
And, as always, feedback is appreciated. Any words of critique or praise, I will take to heart. Chime in.
