Has anyone here had any experience with Mack Extended Warranties? I'm closing in on a new camera and I'm thinking an extended warranty might be a good thing. Any good/bad experiences with these folks? Any opinions on the value of extended warranties in general? This would be a 5 year warranty for about $130 US.

if your buying an expensive camera it could be worth it since repairs can cost as much as a new one... just depends on the cameras cost

Five years is a good deal in this case as long as the insurer stays in business. Any one repair in that time is likely to cost $100 at least. You might want to check with Consumer Reports, the Better Business Bureau, and (I think it's) the AM Best Co. insurance raters.

My thoughts on extended warranties are this:

1) You'll end up saving more money in the long run if you NEVER buy them.

2) (if it's a digital) in 5 years you could probably buy a new one for $130.

Of the 5 digital cameras that I have bought, I bought the Mack warranty on 4 of them. I have never needed a repair, but I have needed to transfer the warranty because I sold the camera. It costs $15 to do a transfer to the new buyer, but having that warranty sure helps sell a camera on E-bay. You can go to the Mack Camera website to read about the company. Been around quite a while. I think US $130 is extremely high, however. I have never paid more than $49 (a year ago) for the 5 year digital camera Mack warranty. But, I did do my homework. Do some research online and see what other companies are selling the same warranty for. You will find that it varies tremendously. Contrary to what your salesperson may say,
you don't have to buy your warranty from the same place you buy your camera. But it would be to their advantage, and probably yours if you did. So, find the very best price that is being quoted on it on line, tell your salesperson that you are interested in and will probably buy the warranty, but you you will buy it from xyz store, unless, of course, he will sell it to you for the same price. Be sure to have all the correct info in front of you when you do this, (name of store, price, etc) so you will be very informed and the salesperson knows you know what you are talking about. Be prepared to do a little haggeling of price. He's not gonna want to let it go cheaply, but he probably will, just to sell it to you.

When I purchased my current camera, the Sony F707, which was my most expensive camera, I chose not to buy the warranty. but I added it to my homeowners policy to cover loss, theft, or breakage and it only increased my premium by $17 per year. I don't think I'll buy another warranty.

Good luck in whatever you decide and enjoy your new camera.
