So it's self-portrait time again.

How convient that it comes at the same time that my class assignment is a self-portrait.

Anyone want to discuss ideas? Also, how can I pull this off without a timer or a shutter release? (Oh, please help, I don't know how I'm gonna do this without taking photos of my feet).

I'm thinking that reflective surfaces will have to be the way to go. I shall have to peruse //www.mirrorproject.com/ for ideas.

I'm addicted to mirror portraits. A trick to making them look less splat-like, I find, is moving the camera off to one side - holding it about 8 inches to the right of your ribcage, frex, and aiming it back up towards you.

Um... can you tell me what "frex" means?

For my class I'm not allowed to use autofocus. So I'm worried about doing this and having a whole lot of out of focus photos. I could use a small aperture to increase dof, but to do that I have to have a ton of light. Unless I use my tripod. Which changes things in a sort of significant way.

"Frex" is just short for "for example".

Manual focus on the spot that you're supposed to be standing (e.g. put a dummy in your place), then step in and take your shot?

Yeah, I was thinking about that. It would help if I had friends that would be the focal point for me. I really gotta work on finding me some of those.

@Grace - you can take arms length shots without a tripod, timer or shutter release - just gotta know what you want to shoot. Also, your cam isn't exactly wonderful, so think about colored lamps, what kind of lighting you want, how would you describe you? Now find a way to shoot that.

You can focus it manually to a given distance if you want. Remember that you're focussing *through* the mirror - so the distance from the camera to the mirror plus the distance from the mirror to the subject is the focus distance you should be aiming at.

Here is my solution to the problem:

It's just a piece of white cardboard with a high contrast pattern drawn on it. The real trick is to stand exactly where the target was.

As someone mentioned, it's not that hard to just hold it out at arm's length. For example, when Isaac turned six, he decided to take his own birthday picture with his new camera:

Set-Up Result
It was only about 7 am and he hadn't had his coffee yet ....

I love Issacs technique there =o) Play with the camera a little doing that and you can get some cool self portraits.

I have no timer either, but you can still take great shots without one. yes it limits what you can do, but you can still do so many things. I have taken millions of self portraits before, and yeah some sucked, but a lot didn't. Plus unlike old film cameras, if you stuff it up (not focused on right spot), you acn keep trying till you get it right.

Now that I think about it This would be a great self portrait. Except I accidently killed Kenan. (Note: Take either the rocks or the fish OUT before cleaning the tank.)
