Ok....heres the deal. I made what i think was a good photo for the technology challenge, but once i uploaded it to the web, it has lost some of the quality it once had, the sharpness has gone, yet on the original it is still crystal clear. What has gone wrong?

Can you provide a bit more information on what steps you go through after you get the picture from your camera ?

What cropping/ resizing/ resampling you do
How you save it before uploading, etc. Knowing what size the image
was before and after would be useful - both pixel dimensions and
file sizes would help a whole lot in helping you out.

it's a known fact that jpeg renderer in web browsers doesn't display as well as image editors, making pics look more jaggy and soft at times.

this could be your problem.

ok, i took the picture on 1280-960, then inm photoshop i created a select box 640-480 in size, i selected the area that i wanted to show and copied and pasted it into a new canvas. i saved it as a maximum quality image to keep the quality (120kb) and in photoshop and even good old paint it looks how i wanted it to be. but when i uploaded it it looks shite.

Hmm - what way are you saving it ? Save, Save As or Save For Web ?

Any idea what colour space/ profile you are saving it in to ?
Which web browser does it look bad in ?
What colour depth is your monitor set for ?

Other than being 'shite' what specifically is wrong with it ?
Colours different ?
Lines looking jagged ?
Blocky regions in areas of similar colour ?

Try looking with another browser. I usually navigate the site with AOL 6, but when I'm voting I try and use NetScape 4.7 as the images tend to look a lot better, especially (as noted above) those where lines play a large role in the composition.
As a test, you can open the file still on your hard drive with the browser -- see if it's any different than the version the browser displays from the internet.

clicked on save as, saved as a jpeg, no idea about colour/space thing, it looks bad in IEXP and in AOL7. monitor is set to 16 bit colour. Whats wrong with it.......blocky areas, where it was once sharp, yes, lines are jagged. colours are the same but blocky areas have merged colours

Try setting the monitor to 24-bit color. Try NetScape/Mozilla browser. Post elsewhere or email to me and I'll take a look (sometime today) if you want. I can check with AOL 6, NetScape 4.7, IrfanView, Quicktime, and Photoshop versions 5 and 7.

Hmm - sounds like too much compression, rather than a browser thing.

Couple of things to check

1/ before saving, make sure it actually is 640x480 (look
at Images Menu - Image Size... (it should say 640 pixels 480 pixels
at the top) just hit cancel to get out

2/ When saving, save it at least as 'high' or 'maximum' quality,
up around the 7 or 8 level for compression. Also save it as
'Baseline Standard' rather than progressive or any of those.

Personally I've always used 'Save for Web' then used the optimise
to file size menu to save at about 147k for dpchallenge and never
had any quality problems from the compression.

Ash, when you said that you copied and pasted the image into a new canvas did you, at that point, resize your new image to 640x480? Or was that done later, and perhaps automatically? I'm wondering if you accidentally applied the jpeg compression to the image when it was still at a larger resolution and then your image got further reduced again after that. Just guessing here. I hope you figure it out.

When viewing jpeg with AOL make sure that you have it set not to compress graphics or the pictures you are looking at will not look good at all. Click on Settings then click on Internet properties in the box that comes up, then choose the Web Graphics tab and select the box by NEVER COMPRESS GRAPHICS. Click ok, then go look at your submission and see if it looks any better.

You are very welome. There are a lot of folks that do not know that AOL will compress the graphics if you do not have it set to never compress them. The jpegs tend to lose a lot of quality when AOL compresses them.
