hi!

as many of you know, i have spent the better part of this summer making some serious improvements to the exterior of my characterless, boring house. i've replaced the roof, am in the process of restoring the original wooden supports for the porch, and have ripped off the ugly, boring, gross, disgusting aluminum siding.

i have been repairing and replacing siding because i wanted to restore the exterior. therefore, the house is in desperate need of a paint job. the bad news: i truly suck at choosing colors.

that's where YOU come in! i've created a layered photoshop file (available as a tiny 2mb zip file here) that has separate shapes for each of the three areas of the house that will have color. all YOU need to do is fill those areas with a nice palette of corresponding colors.

here's the "before" shot of the house:

gross, huh? the good news is that when the ugly, awful siding was removed, it revealed the original cedar shingle siding in the three gables visible in this shot (and in one more that is not visible). here's what those look like:

PLEASE HELP ME! i am totally inept when it comes to choosing color, and this choice will be with me for a long, long time.

the rules:
you can only use three colors (siding, shingles, and trim). this is what i've agreed upon with the painting guys and i just flat-out can't afford any more

the house was built in 1903. although it doesn't look like it in these shots, it does have some very victorian influences (note the kickass leaded glass in the front windows). my preference is to have a color scheme in the victorian range (but something that would not be out of place in contemporary society). not that i fancy my house anywhere near this cool, but the painted ladies in san francisco are a very well-known group of victorian color schemes.

the reward
dinner prepared for you the very next time you are in my neck of the woods. if you can come up with a color combination that just blows me away, i might even be tempted to extend your DPC membership by a year, or reward you in a similar fiduciary manner.

or, you can just do this out of the goodness of your heart. :) god knows i need the help.

ok, start downloading and paint my house!!

So that's the house you've been working on. Looks very good. Unfortunatelly I cannot help you with colors since I'm terrible with such thing myself. Good luck.

Stick with earth tones. you can't go wrong with beiges and light browns. Greys and grey pallet colors are good to.
Stay away from bright colors except white.
I done my house in light bronw colors with forest green trim.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have friends who are dying to paint my house poop brown because "that's the color it was originally!"

i keep telling them that while i do hope to restore the house to its original "feel," there HAS to be some accouting for contemporary styles...

after all, no one wears spats and fedoras now like they did in 1903. :) there HAS to be some middle ground!

Blue shades and greys are good combinations

I tried but failed to photoshop for you, but if you want something more interesting you might try red, white & black. It might be striking combination on the house ...

Try not to pay attention to the really terrible photoshop job. I just painted it in really quickly and it's very messy! But anyway, I always like a cream/yellow color with navy blue. This actualy ended up a brighter yellow than I meant for it to be, but you get the idea.

Personally I've always LIKED brown wooden houses, works well with Craftsman-style architecture especially, and victorian. You can add color in the trim. I took the liberty of painting the gutters too :-)

This is Joey's House:

And this was probably bear_music's house in the 60's...

I'm no help to you, am I muckpond? :)

I vote for the 60's bear music version! Groovy man, really far out! I bet you could do some awesome interior decorating to go with it! Break out the beads and lava lamps :-P

you see why i'm having trouble with this.

ken: while your ideas are not very pragmatic, they are quite entertaining. :) the chick on the motorcycle was a nice touch, and there have been PLENTY of times this summer that i hoped and prayed for godzilla to come demolish my little dump.

fwiw, i have a really cool front door. it's just covered up by that ugly screen door in the picture you see. :)
