Over the last few months, I have entered very few challenges and the ones I did enter I didn't do very well. When I didn't enter, most of the time it was because "the voters won't like this one, there isn't much point entering it". And quite often it was "I can't come up with an idea I think might go over well with the voters". Well, that is ending... now! When I look at my favorite photographers on the site, one thing they have in common is they have their own style. For example: Joey Lawrence, BradP, Kiwiness, Heida, jjbeguin, bobsterlobster, librodo, graphicfunk, and many others (oh, so many others) do very well with the voters for the most part and I think it's because they aren't trying so hard to impress.

From now on I am going to try and stay within my own style, take pictures that I want to take and try not to impress the voters. If I go back in my own portfolio the photos that have been voted the highest are the ones that I most enjoyed taking and I wasn't thinking "now, how would I honestly vote this one?"

Please, don't get me wrong... I love competing on this site and I mean no disrespect to the voting or voters. These are just my thoughts, and I wanted others who may be in the same boat with me to stop trying so hard and just have fun!

Dan

Sounds like you're on the right track dude! I completely agree. I came to the same realization a few weeks back, but haven't listened to my own advice yet! DARNIT! LOL

Just so you know, if you stick your head in a fish tank for a portrait shot, I for one, will give you a ten.

I did the same a while back, that's why I feel good shooting and entering shots I like, or one's just to get a commenters reactions. Lately some, had interesting reactions.

I say submit everything you can as long as it's related, challenges are to help you learn, not to have a clean score all the time.

There is something inside in you that only you can fathom. You are right, stick to what is familiar to you and work on it until you can make it sing. At first it is like groping in the dark. That is, some ideas will work while others will not but everytime you extend yourself you set off something inside that will eventually guide you into the light. Whatever style you posses will yield a winning image if you persist. Do not worry about your score at the start. Consider the experience a journey to produce that gem. The object is to visualize and this comes with practice. You know you can do it. Go do it.

That's a good idea. I have learned so much from DPC. It's humbling to realize how much I don't know. Good luck with future challenges.

Psssst - Dan - I have no class, let alone style.
(I am flattered to be in the company of those listed though - thanks!)

Please the voters or please yourself. The decision is yours, and hope you choose the latter.
