I went to my local camera store to have a feel for the sigma 10-20mm lense (10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC model). The salesman turned me off by telling me that all the new lenses specifically engineered for digital reflex cameras were incompatible with my Canon 10D (some issue with the rotating mirror hiting the back-end of the lense).

Can anybody confirm this to me? After googling around for a while, I am just confused about this compatibility issue.

I have mounted it on the 10D, and everything just seems fine (auto-focus, exposition meter, ...). However, I didn't try to take a shot with it...

Regards,

Vince

try taking a shot, see if the mirror slaps, if it does then no good.

He coulda been right, the canon 10-22 and other new ef-s mounts only work on the 20d or digital rebels...the the 10d doesn't work with ef-s mounts.

see if on the sigma box it says the type of canon mount. If it's ef mount you should be ok, if it's ef-s mount take the lens back.

Well... I though that slapping the mirror on the lense could lead to unwanted, possibly bad consequences on either (or both) of my camera and the store's lense.

Just looking for advices before going on the 'experimental' side!

3rd part lens manafacturers ususally make lens to fit a variety of different formats. I know with Nikon there can't be any rear protructions into the mount. I really dobt they made just the canon version this way. I'd check with sigma just to be sure, but I'm 99% sure it will be fine on the 10D.

It seems weird to me that a Sigma lens would have an EF-S mount instead of a regular EF mount. And I'm not sure if an EF-S lens would even fit on a 10D without modification.

Maybe the salesman was thinking of the Canon EF-S 10-22?

Sigmas DC is the same as Canons EF-s line. Dont use either on anything but a 20d or either of the rebels. If you do, the mirror will slap against the back end of the lens and possibly shatter/break the mirror. The actual locking mechanism is the same between EF and EF-s/DC lenses, but EF-S and DC lenses protrude into the body more. Thats what the S in EFS stands for. Short backfocus distance.

I think the sales man was trying to sell you something else by scaring you off.

The "DC" Sigma line has EF mounts and the rear element is made for cropped APS sized sensors like your 10D. There should be no incompatibility with the 10D. All of the new current ultrawide zooms made for dSLRs by Sigma, Tokina, Tamron are made in APS sensor size in EF mount (I know about the older Sigma 12-24, which is made for EF in FF sensor). Ironically, the only lens that won't fit your 10D is the Canon EF-S Mount 10-22mm.

Here's a link to review of the ultrawide zooms by Bob Atkins.

Yep...what yido said. If you upgrade your camera at a later date too, you can use that lens with any of canons FF cameras as well, there will just be a slight vignetting at the widest range.

I use one with my Rebel, there are some samples in my portfolio, and I'd imagine that it can only get better if you're sticking it on a 20D. At least I hope it would, becasue I'm planning on upgrading to a 20D sometime next year
