I just noticed... there are two 14 yo girls on the site wearing gas masks:

annah
Ennil

I just thought it curious that they are both the same age and that they both found it interesting to take a self portrait with a gas mask on. There must be some cosmic significance, no?

And a 15 year old boy wearing one, it's obvious they all copied me! ;-)

I think it is more that there is a certain style and mood associated with them. DA has lots of gas mask pics.

note to self: "Get a gasmask -- take good pictures"

Circa 1982! Looks like I was the original. :P

edit to add: ...of course, I wasn't a 14 year old girl then, so maybe it doesn't count.

Cosmic significance? Nah, probably not. Sociopolitical significance? Absolutely. It's very saddening that gas masks are as prevalent as they are, especially in the lives and minds of young teenagers.

Moodville, that one on the right, is T-Totally awesome. Disturbing, and freaky. I think these photos strike a subconsiouss nerve of fear, for me at least. Im not sure how or why though. Either way I just wanted to say that the photo is incredible, I like it alot. Im gonna try to add it to my fav's if I can. You go against the pretty, butterflies, rainbow, sunset thing that DP loves to embrace as a whole, and I think you did it well. Probably one of the best I have ever seen here. Just one of those things that people have a hard time grasping. That photography isn't always rainbows and sunsets.

Well, since 9-11 society has changed quite a bit for our youth. A gas mask is symbolism of suffocation with all the horror that this world and it's people produce...no? Then the gas mask is symbolic for the what kind of world we live in, as any other generation from American History as well, world wide from one culture to another.

Perhaps...it's just cool to take a photo with a icon of the society we have become to be.

well I live in Iceland and 9-11 is nothing more then my brothers birthday, so my fetish with gasmasks has nothing do do with that.....

Perhaps not that 9-11 didn't effect you directly, however subconsciencely it has. You watch world wide news right? Over time things in in this world effect us one way or another. Art displicts life.

Now I don't group the whole youth of this world into one catagory....everybody has it's own view and feelings. I'm just pointing out that thw whole world's society (humankind) can be shown through the eyes of our youth. A gas mask is a clear symbolic icon. Pollution's, poisons, cant' breath, etc.

Yes, the world was well on it's way to hell before 9-11...9-11 was just one product of Evil. Although here in America, it's just one turning point in Our history. People and mainly youth are easily influenced with their own cultures including pop culture from around. This has been shown through the ages from generations from generations. I too, can only speak for myself and what I have lived through, and read only about from the culture of America throughout time. I do see trends and art as a refection of thoughts and emotions conjured from a world that they see around them. It effects me too, I have used some type of medium to express my feelings of the world when I was younger. So will this generation as well. A gas mask seems to fit very well.
