Well it's official.. I am a hoodlum, and I have DPC to thank for it... heh last night I went to the local shopping mall too take some pictures, and viola I was asked to leave the property as if I was a common tresspasser! lol... when needed I was even asking politely if I could take pictures... I guess they were worried I was going to steal their super secret interior decorative designs... I didn't really get any good shots... matter of fact I deleted all but two of the photos I took... neither is a great shot but I like the subject matter and if I would have had the time to take enough photos, I might have gotten a good shot... take a look... if proper care was given, does anyone agree or disagree that these subjects have potential? just curious and thanks for looking...

TREE

Of the two, I'd say the tree has the most potential. Not sure where you'd be going with the sign, unless it was to make it part of another picture.

Although I do know hwat you mean. I am likely as not to bring the camera along and make everyone wait, because I think a particular shot has potential for the then current challenge.

While I don't make it a habit to comment on lawbreaker's photos...hahahahahaha...I will tell you that I prefer the tree.

Nice tree.
But it probably wouldn't have gone far in the technology parade. :-)

However, with Christmas coming, you could use it on a party invite, etc.

well thanks for the comments.. BTW neither photo was for the technology challenge.. just things I saw that I thought might have some potential to be interesting in a photo.. I never did get the tech photo I went to look for in the first place.. just got the boot from security :o)

fun pictures : ) !! good for you for being brave enough to try. next time, remember to be discreet, and DONT USE YOUR FLASH (helps with the discreet thing...)

i too have been given the boot in both ikea (a huge furniture store) and a mall in wilmington, nc, for taking pics.

supposedly "their competitors were stealing their ideas". um, yeah.. uh, couldn't their competitors just get the catalog and steal them that way? sheeeesh ..

anyway, some shots from a mall : )

Having been "booted" before, I have taken to actually asking permission now, and usually get better results!! Took a bunch of Fruit 'n Veg shots at my local Safeway after asking permission. Yeah, at first they acted like I was going to steal some top secret "grocery-tending" procedures from them, but eventually decided that I couldn't do any harm!
I always tell them (wherever I may be) that I would be more than willing to come see them and show them all of my shots before I leave so that if there are any that they feel are "compromising" I can delete them right there in front of them. Have never had to do it.
FWIW,

Love that ceiling shot for content and cleverness -- wish I'd taken it! Now I'll be walking around checking out rafter or girder shadows...

I asked for permission (NOT persimmons) at the store I went to for the Fruits&Veggies challenge, and they had no problem. If you find the manager and tell them you have an assignment for a contest or a class I would guess that they'll usually let you do it. Offer to send them inkjet/laser proofs for their records. Give them a valid business card. Let me know if you don't have any...

great ideas, lhall, and generalE.

The "photo student" line has come in handy for me more than once : ) ..

as has showing the lcd previews to people so that they don't freak.

part of the prob for me is that my main cam doesn't look like a p and s. i was in union station, a train station/mall that is an incredible work of architecture and was challenged by an 'official' who asked me if i had permission. i said i was a tourist. they were openly skeptical: "most tourists don't have cameras like that or use tripods". i said, well i'm sorry, but i'm a photo nut, and this is what i do on vacation. there wasn't much they could do/say after that, so they just turned around and walked away.

i don't have that prob if i borrow my wife's little Canon A10. :P

I got run off a few weeks ago from the parking garage at the mall. I was in the parking garage to make an attempt to catch some lightning shots from a storm that was moving through. I was there about 25 minutes before security came around. He asked what I was doing and why, I said I was trying to get lightning pictures and he said not from this property and asked me to leave. I begged and even tried to show him the preview of the pics I had trying to capture the lightning, but he said I must leave now...no cameras on the property at all. So I just packed up and left. Next time Im gonna try slipping the guy a $20 and see what that gets me :)

Probably nothing but $20 poorer!! ;-)

I must admit that sometimes I still find it difficult to take particular photos when I'm on my own in public. I feel that people might think "Why is he taking a photo of a litter bin?" for example.

Sometimes I just don't care though, let people think what they want, they'll probably never see me again anyway!!

I've got pulled aside by cops one after trying to take a picture of a tree near Battery Tunnel in Brooklyn, NY. After I assured them that, it is a tree that I want to photography, they agreed although sent out one officer to watch what I am doing and to check the pics afterwords.
Nevertheless, the police was very polite and understanding I must say.

I just use the 'I'm a photography student and this is for an assignment'
reason. Has work pretty well so far, even though I've been asked
a few times.

I've gotten the boot from several art galleries, so I know what it's like. I always ask (after the first incendent, where the guy wanted to call the police!), sometimes gallery owners say yes, most times, no, but for the yes's, it can be really, really cool (and much cheaper than buying!). The first gallery that objected (well, I had already taken two photos) made me delete the pictures and kicked me out immediately. The other gallery owner kicked me out just for asking. (I guess he didn't want to take the risk that I would cheat.) And a couple times, I had to promise, cross my heart, that my photos would never appear on the web. I can understand this, nobody wants their art cheated. It really depends on the circumstances. At least I haven't been arrested, yet....

great philosophy! it's one that can be applied to many facets of life... who cares what they think if your having fun... like the old saying says, "dance like no one is watching!"... when I was in the mall the looks I got when I took photos didn't bother me... the only thing that made me flinch momentarily was having my camera case slung over my shoulder... a few looked at me like I was wearing a purse.. lol... but after a moment I blew it off and went on my merry way... let them think what they will... I was on a mission :o)

Take a look at any typical photo of Daniel Boone, Lewis & Clark, etc. THEY all wore "purses" too...

Anachronite, Welcome to the Hoodlum's Club. I am a veteran!...lol I was photographing produce at a supermarket and the manager asked me to stop. I asked "why?" She replied "It's not allowed." I buckled and said "Okay" but afterwards thought I should have protested.
Next was in Walmart. I was in the garden center photographing a butterfly. I got THIS PICTURE among others. I got approached there too. Only this time I showed her the pictures on the LCD and she didn't think I was doing any harm.
Just today I was at Lowes with my ever-present camera around my neck. The man who was showing us to the aisle we were seeking commented...asked me what I was doing with the camera. As I've told all the others "I always carry it with me." He looked at me weird till hubby said "She's a photographer." That seemed to appease him and he nodded as if he had a revelation. LOL Btw...I did get a pic of hubby by the lumber....lol
I have many such stories. Mostly people just think I'm a tourist...I live in Florida.

When cameras are outlawed, only the government will have cameras -- and they do! (And bigger hard drives...)
11/14/2002 07:38:21 AM · #21
i went on a photo safari with a friend and she took a picture of me taking a pic at one point. my hair was longer then, and the shot was from the back, with my camera bag prominent.

later on i was showing the pics to my wife, and she goes who's the girl? i said 'honey, that's ME!!!'. she goes 'oh i didnt recognize you with that purse.'

DOH! : )

too funny Grayce.. I think I will try that one myself...
curious, do many of our fellow DPC'ers carry their camera with them wherever they go?

don't forget that us outlaws and hoodlums will have them too... they can have my camera when they pry it from my cold dead hand! :o)

It's my opinion that there's a continuum from those tiny silk Chinese bags through a Kelty backpack with purely artificial and culturally-driven names -- it more depends what you're using it for than the size...although my favorite is surely Satchel Paige...

Thanks Mag!
When I go out without a camera, which is extremely rare, I get this sinking feeling, like I'm gonna miss the shot of a lifetime...lol The only time I don't have my digital with me is when I was rushed out the door. I even take it to church, doctor's offices, restaurants, even the library. EVERYWHERE!!!
