I have had 2 comment on my photo that is now being judged. Both of them
say this is not a macro. I KNOW its not. We were suppose to get up close and personal. READ!!!

don't fret tatoo, in a week their names will be exposed, as well as their inability to read... then we can all have a good laugh... I thought something like that might happen, so I made a macro just in case... good luck though with the rest of the voting.. I feel for ya

What does macro do anyway?

My camera doesn't have that function.

Macro? I thought it said macrkel. And this was my best fish photo yet. I had to brave the winds of the high seas to catch the best looking mackrel out there. Man I guess I have to learn how to read!

Ha ha! Just teasing. I went with a bug shot to avoid such comments. Some people will be difficult and try to find something wrong with every picture. I can see how annoying your problem must be. E-mail me if I was the culprit. I sign most of my comments.

This particular challenge is called MACRO. It's possible that someone did read after all! The challenge states that a macro feature needn't be used and yes, get up close and personal. I don't believe it states anywhere that it doesn't have to be a macro.

From the challenge description:

You need not specifically use your macro feature, but your image should be a close-up shot.

Someone's shot may not meet the technical definition; maybe their magnificaton is 1:2.037. If their intent was to show me a different perspective on an object by being close-in, that's enough to "meet the challenge" for me, and the rest of their score can be based on interest, composition, technical merit, etc.

We needn't nit-pick so much, although a nit would make a fine macro subject...

I've thought about submiting deliberate misreadings -- my mechanic's place for the "Garage" challenge, or some fruitcake for the "Candied" challenge -- but humor seems to rank about 18th on the consensus scoring criteria list...

Now, maybe if we had a "Mr. Magoo"* challenge for best misinterpretation of the challenge topic I could get a better ranking...

*Mr. Magoo is an extremely nearsighted US cartoon character, voiced by the late Jim Backus. His inability to read accurately leads to often-hilarious consequences.

I think that is an excellent idea!

Actually, I tried a little humor for the Childhood challenge - and finished well below 18th. (probably deserved) :-)
Actually, only about 1/2 the comments recognized the attempt at humor.

But since "having fun" outranks "best score" for me here, it won't be my last attempt.

Jim

Jim --

I use humor here whenever possible (see my current entry and my profile page, and my aveage score). But what I meant above is that, on the list of things people seem to consider components of a "good" photo, humor seems to rank pretty low...so be prepared for a lot of positive comments combined with mediocre point totals.

I understood that. :-)
Actually, I'd like to see a lot of comments. The limited number I do get seem to indicate that the humor was lost - probably my fault.

I was laughing all last week at everyone dumping on my horrible picture. It was an accidental shot when I forgot to turn the flash off. but when I went to delet it I discovered there was a 'ghostly' image was in the picture that didn't really exist in the shot with out the flash. And no it was NOT just the flash flare. Well acturally it was just the reflection of some sugar packs on the dash board. But it looked so much like one of those !proof! photos that I decided to entered it as is. * sigh *

While y'all are arguing about titles again, can I ask if "Banshee At One O'Clock!!!" would have done better than 'Sighting.'

Well, all most people saw was bad technique when they looked at my picture.

And I, like the majority of the people, saw fantastic technique in the three winners. I don't mind that the titles keyed the pictures to the challenge. That just made them great pictues with value added impact.

Either title works for me, although "Banshee..." is a little more "exotic-sounding" and therefore might hold people's attention better.

jimmsp, I loved your shot of wild berries. I gave it a 10 and would have given it a 10 if it were in this challenge to. Good job.

It is just like life in the real world. You have the people that laugh at the things you say and others that just give you a blank stare and say Huh. LOL

Hi Tatto,
How can we know the comments of others if the photo is still being judged?
And is this your first time sending the challenge?
because your profile said that
"This user has not submitted to any challenges yet"
Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks.

If you select "Preferences" from the Menu, you'll get a page with a lot of options. On the lower left (in most browsers) is a check-box for "Display Current Challenge Statistics."

If you check this box, your Home page will display your current score (updated approx. hourly) and the number of comments received. If you then click on that number you can read the comments, but not who made them (unless signed). After the voing is over, the names WILL appear with the comments on the photo's own page.

That would be "Preferences" from the menu.

Of course, thanks for catching that! I fixed it above, too.

So the dpchallenge system should be fixed...
(in this case, it shouldn't state that a user has not submitted..)

The profile can only be updated after a challenge is completed; a current submission "doesn't count" since it could be disqualified during the voting.
11/12/2002 12:14:34 PM · #24
the profile does state how many challenges you have submitted to, though, so, if this is your first submission, it would show that. hope that helps.
11/12/2002 12:23:13 PM · #25
doesn't it say at the bottom, though, that the current challenge is not included?
