I was wondering about studio strobes. I want to buy a set for my house, I am not a big time portrait guy, I would like to learn though. I was looking at some on ebay and I was wondering about watts. What strength do I need, there was a three light kit that had 320 watts. Is that equal to 320 watts of a light bulb or will they be brighter? If someone could reccomend a set I could use for portraits of myself and wife that would be great. I dont need anything real fancy I would at least like to have 3 lights.
Thanks
Travis :D |

They seem kind of exspensive, I am looking for more of an "off" brand. |

the watts are usually watt/sec of power
which is the discharge rate of the flash
(roughly 320w/s is equiv. (if your flash duration is 10ms)
32000watt lightbulb (damn bright)
this number is related to the amount of light but can be (& is ) highly inflated by some flash mfg.
AlienBee list effective w/s (and in smaller print the real w/s )
I have a AB400 & use it alot (very rarely at full output)

I bought some on ebeay really cheap. I think the brand is Ying-Yang or something. It's a set of 3 strobes, 3 stands, 2 softboxes, 1 umbrella, carrying bags and an IR trigger. It was a while ago but I think I paid 200 dollars or something like that.

Edit: This is it Strobes

strobes are expensive. Alien bees are kind of a budget brand for strobes actually. |

instead of getting something off brand, i would go for a single AB400 and a brolly box or something of that sort to diffuse the light. you can take great portraits with just one light and a simple reflector

i have a set of two alien bees, B4000s. They're portable, efficient, self-cooled, have modeling lights AND mine are hot pink! :) Love them! |

Any problems with this setup so far? How has it worked out for you?

I have the same set and do not need it on the highest setting and at this point while I'm still learning, I have not used more than the umbrella and a softbox on low. |
