Anything below a five? A four or below? I'm just curious what people consider a bad score or do most of you don't care what your score is?

Anything lower than your average score maybe. That's reasonable isn't it, to try and beat your average at least?

A good score is anything that bumps on of the images off you profile page but I would have to agree if it is above your average you're doing just fine.

I like to be at 5 or above to feel like I did acceptably, and I'm satisfied with being in the top 50% of photos submitted. Below that and I think I should rethink my shot. 6 or above is a "hurrah" moment for me, as is anything in the top 50. :)

I go with the others on trying to beat my own average score.

A photo that scores to few comments. When it doesn't get comments and doesn't get many postchallenge hits, it isn't a good photo.

I get dissapointed by anything below a 6.5, though really anything under 6 I'd consider bad and tend to think I should have recognised that it wasn't worth entering.

Though some day I'd like to do as well again as my first entry. It's been down hill since then.

My personal goal is to stay above 6 if I can, thats the yardstick I currently use.

I too am a 6'er. I try to achieve at least a 6 every week. If not, I really look at my pic and try to figure out what I could have done to achieve it. Sometimes a technically good picture doesn't sit with the voters. Doesn't mean its a bad picture, just didn't go over well for that challenge.

I wanna get there too (maintain), the 6 - 7 level, but I think someone like myself is better served doing it slowly. I said it before, a high score or a win at this point would only lead to greater disappointment later. Be patient and if you are really pationate about what you are doing, you'll achieve it at some point.

You don't see it coming Owen - just one day there's this idea, and then if I can just get x right ...

I personally feel that below 5 is bad, in the 5's is OK, over 6 is what I'm aiming for - providing I'm entering a shot purely to do well in the challenge. There are other criteria.

Azrifel - not necessarily 'bad' just because of few comments and low post-challenge hits.

I try to score in the 7's.
Am pleased with 6's.
Can live with better than my average.
Don't like less than my average.
Get deeply depressed in the 4's
Am impossible to live with when setting an all time low score as I am this week.

Thanks for all the replies.

So I take it that some believe that a low score doesn't always equals a bad photo also?
06/05/2003 05:35:09 PM · #14
i used to think that anything under 6 was bad. then I changed that to five when i stopped getting 6's. Now, this week, I'm going to change it to 4. Sometimes I submit pictures that I really like that other people don't like or understand for whatever reason, and thats ok. Its just good to remember that before you submit so you wont get depressed about it.

Absolutely true. A bad score just means a bad score. Most of my more favourite pictures have scored under 5 here but tend to be the ones that I knew I shouldn't have bothered entering here but that I liked anyway. High scores here just relate to most popular/ least flawed/ most fitting on the challenge. There is a lot of photography with perhaps more deeper content and less superficial prettyness that will never do well on a popularity voting site like DPC but can be very satisfying to persue.

When I started I really wanted to get over 5. That lasted for quite awhile. Lately I'm disappointed if I'm under 6. This week, I'll be disappointed. Its my own fault. I knew what I wanted my image to look like and it just didn't pan out the way I thought. It will likely be under my average too. But I would consider under 5 bad for me. 5-6 is disappointing generally (I was happy to score in the 5's with my flower pics). over 6.5 is good. over 7.0 is party time

I try to improve my average each time, and the way it is going it should be getting easier.

Hmmm, the statistician in me would say that you need a control chart... I think your recent performance is within the "noise".

I consider a bad score anything under 5.3 I suppose, which is a little under my average. Anything in the upper 5's and I'm happy. And anything over 6 I'm very happy. If I ever get 7+ I'll probably run out into the street, singing and dancing. :)

so true. just because a photo doesnt appeal to the masses as a whole doesnt mean it can't stand on its own. i discovered this first hand when, after putting some of my work in a local coffee shop, rehearsal sold on the second day! i couldnt believe it--especially after it only scored mid 5's here. so, something to feel good about--not having mass appeal is not a terribly bad thing! ;)

I aim for the top 80%, which usually corresponds to a score between 5.8 and 6.2
