I'm looking to get a 100mm macro lense for my cam. Anybody have any opinions on Tameron and Sigma lenses compared to the Canon lenses?

Can't comment on the Tamron.

The Sigma is a really good macro lens, but the AF can be slow.

The Canon has USM and focuses much faster. It's also about $100 more.

Focus speed is really not that big of an issue if you are shooting macros, portraits and the like, but if you wanted to use it for something like sports, then it could be an issue.

I have a Sigma 105 macro lens in like new condition that I am thinking about selling, PM me if you are interested.

It would be mostly used for macro. I have other zoom lenses for sports and the like.

For macros of bugs focusing speed is important. I love the canon version.

I have the Canon one and I love it. It is an awesome lens. Can't really comment on the other two.

The Canon is always considered the best of the three - but the Tamron and Sigma are definitely excellent quality as well.. and since they're both cheaper than the Canon, they're well worth the consideration of a purchase.

I have the Sigma 105 and love it.

I just did this research a while ago, when I was shopping for a Macro. According to my research, the opitical quality goes (best to worst): Canon, Tamron, Sigma. The price goes (high to low): Canon, Tamron, Sigma. The difference among these three in term of sharpness and color restoration is very minimal. At the end, I got myself a Sigma 105. after a month of usage, I can say that I am a very happy owner of sigma 105.

Hope it helps!

What about magnifying lense kits? Are they as effective?

don't even think about it.. I bought hoya +2 and +4 filters, and image quality is like you'd smear vaseline on your lens !

get a decent macro lens, the Canon if you're going to shoot bugs, the sigma if you're going to shoot still objects.

what's the logic behind choosing the canon of the sigma for bugs? Macro is almost always done in MF and it makes not difference. I find the AF on my canon 100 hunts so I don't ever use it except at non macro distances.

I have done macros of bugs with my Sigma.

Look at Jacko's bug macros, all done with a Sigma lens.

hmmm Sigma...Does it make a big difference in the 2x or how far the affective mm length goes on macro shooting? If its say 300- 800mm f5.6 or 120-300mm f2.8? with the macro ratio of 1.3 or 1.4?

I think at those close distances (ie: for bugs) that MF is faster and more precise (if you have a good eye) than AF - correct me if I am wrong. I always use MF on my Sigma unless I'm using it as a short telephoto (non-macro) lens.

The Sigma does have external focusing - which really shouldn't bother most people.. I believe the Canon has internal.. not sure about the Tamron.

owning a nikon, i can't say for the canon lens, but i did recently buy the tamron 90mm di over the sigma and i absolutly love it. the autofocus is a tad slow, but that's not unusual for a macro. i use it on ocasion, but it's usually in MF mode. the bonus is that it's quick and simple to change from AF to MF while looking through the view finder.

for some samples, check out my journal... a lot of the photos there lately have been taken with it...

Photo.net has a comparison of the Tamron and the Canon macros. Optics wise, the Tamron was a bit better but they seem to think Canon was easier to use.
