Hey everyone... I'm going to be getting a lot of money here in a few weeks and I am planning on getting a new camera. Something really nice. I need help on what's good and prices and stuff. Probably digital. I prefer Nikon. but if you have any input, it would be very appreciated. I though, what a better place to ask then here... :)

I would say Pick one in your price range from like Nikon, Olympus and Canon and then research the three and decide which one fits your needs best. Don't forget to add in all the goodies like extra battery, bag, memory, etc., etc. Try DPreview.com or Steves-Digicams.com for reviews on the ones you choose.

Why not stick with Canon, they're miles ahead of the competition - except if you have great Nikon glass sitting around unused, that is...

Canon may or may not launch the 20D successor sometime soon, so if you're not in a hurry, you might want to wait a couple of months for that to happen and then either get the 20D at a discount or its successor if it's worth the extra money.

The 350D kicks the Nikons all over the place in all but one professionally done comparison reviews (out of maybe 7 or 8) that I've read over the last few months. Don't even mention the 20D or the Nikonians go green with envy - the still "current" D100 is as old as the 20D's pre-predecessor, the D60! Want "proof" for my Canon-friendly claims: go check out your local photo dealer's "used" section. Lots of Nikon glass and gear, hardly any Canon...

Just my 2 cents.

At entry level DSLR there is not much difference in price or much else for that matter between the 300D and the D50. I have no idea how much "a lot" is, but I'm guessing she is wanting in at entry level.

"A lot" is more than what we are getting in dividends this year...

One thing I would advise Samantha, go and look at a few and handle them etc. Some of the dslr cams are quite heavy to handle and need some getting used to.

The canons are very good, sorry Nikon camp, LOL

I'm leaning heavily towards the Canon Digital Rebel XT... Now, is there any way I can get a good package? I like the one's on ebay, but is there anywhere else I can find this kind of deal?

I personally think Minolta is best... that's why I have one! With the new 5D, you have no excuse...

I like the 350D too though I actually held one yesterday for the first time, and it wasn't too comfortable in my hand, which has kind of put me off a bit.

I have quite large hands, but I dont think that is the problem (I'm used to holding my tiny Fuji S5000!). It seems quite square around the hand grip - not very ergonomic?

The trouble I have is, that this would be pushing my budget. Anything else that compares to this (or is slightly better) costs more again!
I would have settled for the slightly lesser 300D, though I didn't realise that this is no longer available new. I don't really want to buy used...

A predicament!

Nikon D2X, very nice and very expensive. If you are new to dSLR, consider the D50, if you are looking to expand your system then D70s, or better yet, the upcoming D200.

If you are looking at Rebel XT, another nice choice. Look at price and features and make your decision. Not too many bad dSLRs out there. It just comes to price/feature/brand loyalty combination. Which is right for you? Only you can answer that.

BTW, I'd stay away from those "kits" on ebay. Most of the accessories are not that high quality. If I had to start over again, I'd just buy the body and then buy only the lenses and accessories I wanted. Saves more money and time in the long run. As for the XT, if you are interested in that, then I'd consider buying the body, a lens like the Tamron 28-75 XR Di to start off (skip the kit lens), perhaps an extra battery/grip, a fast and large CF card (e.g. Sandisk Extreme III 2GB or a Kingston Pro 2GB), a dust blower bulb, and perhaps a UV and a polarizer filter. Perhaps even a bag to put all that stuff into.
