I would like to thank those who take the time to make comments on challenge entries and also I would like to encourage those who don't make comments, or make very few comments, to comment more frequently. I know for myself, I check my assignment entry quite often during the voting week and I really like to see comments. More often than not, the comments help me to figure out why I am getting a high or low score on my entry. I myself am starting to take more time voting and making comments on more photos. Thanks all, this is a great site and learning tool.

Yes, I appreciate the comments too. I am getting VERY few of them, so each one is more precious than gold, even though most of them are negative. Negative feedback is still FEEDBACK.

And remember, folks, a comment does not have to be lengthy to be useful. The thought that leads to you picking that '1' button on my photos can probably be expressed in less than 10 words!

Seriously. I'd rather see a long list of half-dozen word comments than wonder why the other 70 people who gave me such low scores did so. Type "too blurry" or "too dark" or "not enough contrast" or "good idea but lighting is bad" or "meets topic but doesn't appeal to me" and you will suddenly transform that 4-or-lower vote into something that the photographer can DO something about, and it should only take you about 10 seconds to do. Not to exclude you 5-or-higher voters; you can type "nice angle" or "good lighting" or "great subject, a little blurry" or "I laughed until I cried" or something in the same amount of time.

(Or you can make me tear all my hair out, I don't care, less tangles to worry about then.)

I must say that I would rather see 100 negative comments than 100 positive comments. How can one learn if one does not realize the mistakes they're making?

is there a way to respond to a comment?

I also love to see comments on my work but for some reason I am not have only gotten two on my first photo. I would love to hear more input so that I can grow from my newbie state.

yes click on the name of the person leaving a comment which will take you to that persons profile and from there you can send that person a reply to the comment that was left by sending a personal message

Well, it helps to hear what's good, too, so you know to keep doing those parts, so both are useful.

I have received 10 comments on my 'sound' photo and I have left 10 comments on other sound photos...

Think how many comments there would be if everyone commented on a minimum of 10 percent of the entries! 150 entries times 15 each = 2250 comments!

Or how about each time you open the site to see if your score has changed; if you would comment on 1 or 2 photos each time, think how many there would be!

I really wish everyone would do their fair share. It's not right to only take and not give. My liquid photo isn't doing so well and it would be really helpful to receive some constructive tips. I've commented on 30 so far, how many have you?

I try hard to match number of comments I recieve if not surpass the number I recieved. I started doing this a few weeks ago. But at the same time I remember not to be cruel in my comments and remember if I think something doesn't fit a challenge or something just isn't right I leave a comment asking questions about the image and know I can go back and revote or even edit my comment if the person responds to my comment.

In "Liquid" I have 110 votes and 0 comments and 4.63xxx. The score is low, but it sure would be nice to know why people don't care for it. Something like , missed challenge, poor exposure, blurry, anything would help.

This finished at 29 in the Home Sweet Home challenge with an average score of 5.764. I'm quite pleased with that. There wasn't one negative comment during the voting either; thanks to those who commented. But because I didn't get any negative comments, I really didn't learn how to improve the image. That's what most people are looking for here I believe. Thanks for indulging me.

orussell, your photo was obviously liked by most people, and did well. To get to first place I don't think you need a process of taking away what is bad... it'll just be an element of inspiraton that will come to you which will lift it above the rest. I'm sure it will come with experience!

"Indulged" as requested with a gigantic comment for your photo on that page. :) As a rule, I generally try to comment on the ones I vote 7s and up, and 3s and down, then work up/down from there if I have time left over. I try to comment on about 20 or so images per challenge, can't do more since I often write a lot. I'm still not very far into this week's comments.

P.S. -- I only have 2 comments myself still, and refreshing the window doesn't seem to be helping one bit! (pout) ;)

Maybe I'm guilty of this on some level. I've been leaving far fewer comments, but they have been substantially longer than the average comment I receive. I've been doing less critiques too. Time is always an issue for everyone, myself included. I've been having a hard enough time trying to vote. I'll take some of the blame for this because I used to comment a lot. It got to the point where a few people PM'ed me because they haven't seen a comment from me for a couple weeks.

At this point with the critique club stuff, I'd almost rather just take requests than get stuck with something randomly. Its just more personal and I feel a lot better about it. There are several of them I feel I've done a good job with, but I don't even know if they get read. If you ask me for one, you damn well better read it :) And right now, I'd rather just leave critiques than vote. I have been voting because its not fair to enter challenges and not vote on anything. But getting to everything means leaving a lot less comments.

So I guess what I'm asking is, do you think it is better to be fair and vote on everything, or just vote on some (more than 20%) and leave a lot more comments? For me, maybe I'd feel less guilty about not voting on all the pictures and leaving more comments (which may or may not be on your picture and may or may not be at all helpful) if you folks think that the chance of a comment outweighs a rating.

Take care and good luck - Bob

I have been commenting less on the current challenges, but I joined CC and have actually made more comments than I have been lately. I also just quit my job so I could make more comments (didn't need the job anyway). I asked opinions, and everyone said I'm better used in the CC, rather than commenting during voting. So, anyone who really wants honest help, feel free to click that button. Can't guarentee, but it wouldn't hurt either.

WooWee!
122 votes, 4.5 and now 1 comment. Pretty good with everything else that is going on.

It's perfectly "fair" to not vote on all the pictures. The order the pictures show up in is randomized for the very reason that it is sometimes not possible to get through, view, and vote for every picture. Combined with a minimum percentage to vote on, it should result in fairly close-to-even number of votes for all pictures, plus/minus a statistical abnormality and a slight fudge for the differing number of pictures every voter has time for.

And yes, I'd rather have 50 votes and 30 comments than 110 votes and 3 comments any day.

What's more, I'm going to keep stressing this: a short, 5-10 word brief impression style comment is still more useful than a total lack of comments, and takes virtually no time to leave; there is no reason you have to significantly cut down on the number of images you view and vote on to at least leave minimal feedback. I would also rather have 25 "too dark" comments than 0 comments.

Feedback=good. Yes, I appreciate some people take the time to leave longer feedback. Yes, sooner or later I will take advantage of the CC. But Any Feedback Is Good (TM), so I still encourage the short ones as well.
