Well, I've had a hard time coming to dpchallenge this week. There has been a big red "This image has been disqualified for the following reason:" starring me at the face all week, and it just hits me really hard.
I wasn't happy with my score, so I basically DQ'd myself.
I've always been the type to say that I cared more about just entering something that I liked, something that showed a different style or a creative edge that other people may enjoy.
Well, I don't know what happened, but I let my pride get the best of me, to be honest, now that I look back at things, I'd take a 3 overall score over the DQ...
That being said, if you're ever thinking of pulling your entry for a low score, don't do it...this feels much worse than getting a bad score.

David....
Don't give up. Don't let it get you down. Trust me, with what I have been going through in my personal life, thank goodness I have DPC to keep my creative juices flowing. I haven't been getting good scores myself even though I think my photos are good. Its kind of like writer's block just photographer's block. You have wonderful photo. I happen to really like the "Lonely Park Bench". You have a great talent.

Hey ... I did the same thing! :) I was feeling the same way about it. I did a self portrait, didn't think about what it really looked like, and submitted it. Then I had some other people look at it (mom!), and she said, "What is up with your nose?!?" I had turned my computer off (which I rarely do), and when I tried to turn it back on, it was DEAD! OMG! I couldn't get to the pic to take it off in time. I ended up going on vacation for the weekend, dreading what kind of score Monday would show me. I was able to connect to the site on my kid's computer ... and just as I thought, my fellow DPC members were telling me it was not a good (aka flattering) photo. Sigh ... I just felt so dejected! I did a self dq myself. I thought about it, and I just couldn't go through a whole week of comments about my nose. I actually was not getting a "bad" score - 4.6 or so - but I felt like I had put myself up to get scored, and I felt awful ...
So deapee ... I understand completely, and I commend you on bringing this up. When the challenge is over, everone will be able to look up my nose all they want (in the dq section) ... but at least they can't vote on it! :)

I am sorry for you, know what it must have taken first to withdraw and then to have the confession...
I am also tired of seeing unreasonably low scores. Tired of taking shitty pics and tired of taking okay pics valued to be shitty.
The only difference is I now withdraw from the challenge before it starts. Sad but true. I take my pics, process it and once the tally of entrees hit 300, I'm out. I did not even bother to enter branches.... another 400'er, I know. But I 'participate', for me. This is not about DPC or the family of DPC, it is about me. |

I too know how you felt David. It was the comments rather than the score that upset me. I asked on a forum how to self DQ and many people persuaded me to just leave it. It was painful, but I left it in - the lesser of two evils.
The good news is that within a couple of challenges you won't even remember this challenge;)
The whole thing altered the way I comment though...I try to remember there is a human being attached to the image rather than an annonymous robot;) |

Hi there.
I was looking through all the photos of my favourite DPC photographers this morning. You know the ones -- they just seem to have a gazillion ribons under their belt already. Know what I found? Quite a few real low scoring entries! (But I still like most of them.) I saw one that got over thirty 1's! (as well as a few 10's and a 9 from me!) The voters are an unpridicatble bunch.
There's also the occasional ribon photo with a comment "Well I know I wont score much for this..." style comment.
And trust me, I know exactly how it feels to get a really low score. But you'll just as seldom ever come lowest as you will get a blue ribon you know! :)
Express yourself. If you're feeling depressed, why not submit a depressing photo. Get in touch with yourself through photography. oh, and if you succeed in that, let me know how you did it!
Remember, it's the journey, not the destination! :)
