Our 8 month old battery has been having issues. About 10K shots have been taken with it. The last few weeks, the charge has not been holding well at all. Full charge goes down to about 25% after about 20 shots with flash.

Yesterday I tried to charge it and put it on the charger. It flashed once, then twice, then 3x and then finally, solid light - which should indicate a full charge. All within about 10 seconds - not right at all. I left it on for a few hours and put it in the camera - it said it was a full charge in the camera. I was able to take about 25 shots and it died.

Is this typical? does it just need to be replaced? Or is it a faulty battery?

Must be a faulty battery because those batteries aren't supposed to develop a "memory" like NiCads and NiMHs.

Yes, they aren't supposed to have a memory, but they do have limited lifespans.

I have one which drops out in about 15 mins. It used to last a full half day when new. Its probably nearly a year old and at least 15,000 shots on that battery alone. Needs replacing.

Thanks for the input, folks!

So, it's just at the end of its life? I'm assuming there isn't a warranty?

Yeah, sounds like the battery is shot! I think the cell life on these generally is about 2 years (someone may want to correct me on this) and the batteries I have (I have 5 of them) are about a year and a half old and still going strong at the moment. I use both genuine Canon ones as well as a couple of 3rd party ones and they have all been very good! I use the battery grip too so I am always running 2 at a time so maybe they could be one their way out but I'm not noticing it because of that. I shot some roller skating championships a few months back and I had 2 running in the grip continuously for about 5 hours before the battery bar dropped. The only time I switched the camera off was to change memory cards!
