To those who are part of the DPChallenge community, it is no secret that it is the community that makes us more than just another photography web site. We are friends, we are family, and we have shown time and again that we truly care about each other as people, and are willing and eager to help each other in times of need.

It is therefore no surprise that Hurricane Katrina and the devastation left behind have been at the forefront of our minds and conversations. As the costliest and deadliest natural disaster in the United States in our lifetimes, many of us wish to help, and many want or need to talk about the impact this disaster has had on them personally or emotionally. All of us share a sense of loss.

Some active members of the community have been displaced by Katrina. As a community, we all share the need to know how they are doing -- and if we can help them in any way.

We, the DPChallenge Administrators and Site Council, are similarly affected by this tragedy. Words cannot begin to express our feelings about the death and destruction caused by Katrina, and the human suffering left in its wake. We share your sense of loss, and we share your desire to help in whatever way we can.

As many of you already know, the most direct way to help the survivors is by donating to the American Red Cross. Anyone can donate by visiting the American Red Cross web site. Individuals in the United States can also call the American Red Cross at 800-HELP-NOW (800-435-7669) to donate.

Some members have expressed a desire to donate their print sales to the relief efforts. There is now a checkbox on the home page where you can opt into the donation program. Upon checking this box, you agree that any sales made from Sep 2nd through Sep 15th will be donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina via the Red Cross.

Once again, thank you for doing what you can to help in this time of need. We are truly proud to be part of such an exceptional community.

Sincerely,
The DPChallenge Administrators and Site Council

Kudos to you guys! It's a wonderful gesture.

I'm one of those people that have put off prints on DPCPrints so I'm going to put some pictures up and hopefully contribute to the cause. I tried once before to put pictures on there but the file sizes were way too big. Can someone please direct me on how to use it? I'd really like to get some prints up.

Great idea and good work on the quick implementation.

In addition to DPC, this was posted on another site. Thought I'd share.

*claps*

And has one of the first warm fuzzies since this tragedy....

It's nice to see the nobility of man...

(though I do have a question...will we be able to extend the donation period as an option?

I guess we can get to that when the 15th rolls around)

Nearly 2,000 prints for sale so far. Thanks to everyone who's participating! I've got the warm fuzzies, too =)

theSaj -- I don't believe it will be a site-supported feature after the 15th, as the way we built this thing won't support it.
