It has a nice emotion to it, but its a bit flat for my taste. She looks like a younger bette midler! A bit more contrast would help. I hope that helps.

I like the feel of it. And I would have to say I see the resemblence to Bette, but this lady is more attractive.

I like the shot. I agree on a little more contrast, also I've found using a sepia filter helps with the skin tone. A while ago some one posted this site which you can add filters over the image, it works great.

the (small) problem that I see with bumping the contrast is that there will be more complection cleanup

I hope I can be honest with you. The color version is aweful in my opinion. You got the reddish gloves, the red lipstick, the reddish hair...and all are no going too well together. With you not showing very much of her 'pose', seeing as the entire right arm is chopped, it doesn't make much sense for her to have her arms on her head like that. I could see if she was trying to be sexy...but then the look on her face just isn't right. She looks like she's smiling for a school portrait, but she's wearing a bra. Which also, by the way doesn't enhance the photo at all since we can't see it either. I'm getting the feel that it's suposed to be sexy, but I'm just not feeling it with her expression. Does that make sense? The makeup is overpowering her face. Lighten up a bit, she's got quite light skin tones, and that makeup just doesn't seem right. Stick with the black and white version. One other small detail that may have gotten overlooked is the '5 o clock shadow' so to speak under her arm. If I were trying to capture my moment forever, when I looked back on it, I wouldn't want my first impression to be 'crap, I havn't shaved my armpits today.'

Hope you don't take this the wrong way, it's just one opinion and by all means, not the most important opinion in the world. The photo just doesn't seem to flow right for me. Seems like too much is clashing. You know? Gosh don't hate me.

Yeah no offense should be taken to the critique you just gave. Anyone can look at the color and high contrast black and white and see the b&w looks much better. But as a newbie I didn't really understand why. Great job picking every detail out. If taken constructively, the critique given could be used to make a color photo that would be absolutely stunning. The b&w isn't bad though, and in my opinion I would stick with it for now.

I HATE YOU! For not critting all of my stuff that well!

I agree with all of your points ...

The color version had no post at all and wouldn't have seen the light of day except someone asked to see it...

When I started to work with this ... it went directly to b&w I thought the "red" tones would translate well. The 5 o'clock shadow has been addressed (I hate armpits).

The color verson won't really get any work... as it just looks better in b&w

Left comments... Please understand that I don't have much experience with model shoots from this side of the camera and am not very good at it, so I was just trying to give advice the best way I knew how. :-)

Ya know, I think just running them through Neat Image cleaned them up a lot. Here are both versions after NI:

Very pretty model. Here is my take on it.

Out of the color ones, Barndog's version looks the best to me. Actually looking at all of them, it is pretty obvious to me that there is a wide variance in how people have their monitor adjusted. Wish all monitors came with a way to easily calibrate them.
This is one problem I run into time and time again. What looks great on my monitor, might look way too bright or dark or off color on someone else's. Depending how they have it tweaked.

Working from the color version. Paid no attention to any local controls (armpit shadow needs work, especially) or better cropping, but just overall effect. Made B/W conversion heavily favoring red channel and added some glow to it.

I'm in agreement with most of the critiques re: cropping, odd pose etc. This is just a technical/aesthetic exploration of possible tonalities.
