So, where do you all want to go?
08/31/2005 02:14:19 AM · #2
Anywhere!! work stress is a pain.. October seems like a good month to get out again. Heatwave should be gone right?

Hope to get together again!

Yeah, we need to get back together again! Any thoughts on where to go?

What do these "Get Togethers" usually consist of? I just imagine a bunch of us walking around LA like tourists.

It wouldn't be LA if you didn't see people wearing "I <3 NY" shirts...don't get me started...

I made it out to a beach outing with Arie (mirdonamy) and Eric (qmdi).. we just sort of walked up and down the beach and took photos while chatting it up. I also made it out to the California Poppy Fields with a larger group.. we met up at the bottom of the hill, but sort of ended up spreading out on our way up. Just took pictures, chatted some more.. etc, etc.

By the way, I live right down the street from that Veteran's Building shot in your profile.. and am finishing up at UCLA right now. Just thought that was a little coincidence.

Anyway, if you really want to wear a hawaiian shirt or one that says I <3 NY, feel free.. :P

/edit: Not sure if I will be able to make it this weekend, but we'll see. I'll keep you all updated.

I just got back from there tonight : )

Usually people pick a photogenic destination (or a couple close together) and photograph with somewhat more intensity and purpose than the average tourist taking snaps of their family in front of a landmark to prove they were there (although I try and through in a few of those two). I've only been (so far) to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco -- I had to skip another up on Mt. Diablo near Walnut Creek (about 30 miles east of S.F.).

In L.A. a good location might be the La Brea Tar Pits, which is next to the Art Museum. You need to be careful, because a lot of the interesting buildings (e.g. the new Disney Center, Hollywood Sign) will be copyrighted -- you might not be able to sell prints or anything.

Driving around the last week I saw some interesting schools (Hamilton High) and churches (Ethiopian Orthodox) -- main problem in L.A. is stuff is so scattered you need to drive evrywhere, and everyone else is all the time as well : (

If you don't want to just take pretty pictures, you might try for the interesting-but-ugly -- oil wells and enormous satellite dishes abound.

Ah, GeneralE is from Oakland...I'm visiting my college roommate in Oakland next week. I used to go to junior college up in Saratoga (near San Jose in the SF bay area, for everyone else). I miss the Bay Area a lot; the culture, green trees instead of desert brush.

As far as LA, yeah, a great deal of my photos around town are opportunistic shots from my car or things I spotted while driving...that is definitely Los Angeles. I can't decide what I thing of LA, though. It is my home and I like it here, but I can see at some point perhaps this city will drive me up into the mountains in search of some chunk of land that isn't paved over and littered with movie posters.

But I don't let that stop me from telling people who live elsewhere where to go ... : )

I love LA! I can walk around like a tourist and photograph everything in site, and enjoy every minute of it!

I like going on free get togethers mostly, because I am really broke. I can find things to photograph outside my apartment building... everywhere, there's art!

Okay, enough babble. I think I'd like to go somewhere that we can practice macro. A park maybe? I also love architecture. Maybe we can head out to Brian's area and photograph Westwood?

2. Westwood (UCLA - I've never been on campus)

Okay, so my sister is moving on the 1st and needs my help. Seems that no matter what, something always comes up. How's Sunday for you all?

What are you all doing next weekend? Sept 24th or 25th? If you are free, let's do something! Anyone up for it?
09/21/2005 05:08:48 PM · #16
I'm up for a light shooting either Sat 24th or Sun 25th. Last weekend was tough as I shot the LA county fair on Sat and then a Brazilian Carnaval on Sunday. I'm looking to go for a short relaxed shoot. Perhaps some horses if they are available.

I love horses. Want to go to the LA Equestrian Center?
09/21/2005 07:21:09 PM · #18
It'd have to be Sunday though. I am helping paint my sister's condo on Saturday.

Arie, there seems to be a free jumping contest this weekend.
I'm planning to go this weekend. Let me know.

Sadly, I couldn't get there. My sister needed me. I'll send you a PM...
