This is scary for anyone who travels frequently by plane!!!!

Actual crack in a US Airways DC-9 window frame! Fliers beware of the sub standard maintenance on the airplanes that you fly on. You won't believe this when you see it; this is an actual crack that was found in the window frame on a DC-9. This could have caused a major in-flight problem! I sent this to a friend in aircraft certification to see what action the FAA could take on this problem.

Might not be a laughing matter for people who have to fly on Northwest Airlines where the people who would normally inspect for and repair a crack in a window frame are on strike.

LOL!! That's classic.

I could see that causing a fairly large 'in-flight problem'... LOL

The aircraft has to be inspected by the FAA periodically (who are not even Northwest employees).
Also, usually the flight inspectors are in a totally different grade then the mechanics and represented by a different union. Although I may be wrong on that though.
Rest assured, the FAA won't let them fly without the proper inspections done by FAA certified inspectors.

And coming from someone in aerospace, that crack is a major threat to the aircraft's passengers. If that crack were to open up in flight, it could expose all the passengers to gasses which may not be safe to breath.

Not to mention freezing temperatures the passengers may not be able to withstand.

My luck I'll get that window seat. :(

THIS IS A VERY FUNNY THREAD!

A crack in a windscreen is not as dangerous as you would think....a
cracked passenger window is not very dangerous either. You DO NOT have
to worry about gases any kind if a window was to break (just lack of
some gases) of and the extreme cold temperature is not an issue either
because you will not be at altitude for long. As for Northwest
airlines.....OR ANY AIRLINE. The aircraft (Any) has a MEL that it must
follow (Minimum Equipment List) in order for the pilot to accept the
plane for flight. If he takes off with an unsafe airplane, he WILL
lose his job. It is simple, the PILOT is the first one to run into the
mountain....he will not fly an unsafe aircraft.

This joke picture was funny and is a U.S. Airways plane

If you shoot a window with a gun, the window will NOT blow out, there
will be NO explosive decompression and I would not feel easy about
being on an aircraft with a broken window but KNOW that I do not need
to break out into prayer and if it did complete break out, the only
danger is to people within 10 feet of the window breaking completely
out...and also know enough to say that the plane will not fly until any
cracked window is fixed! If the Mechs are on strike, it will sit on
the ground WHERE IT LANDS.....

Chill people, and be glad that PROFESSIONALS are not going to take
risks!

On a side note, some of you sound like single use point and shoot
camera users that do not know what aperture is and still try to give me
advice about my pictures!

Now can someone please explain to me how to make a friggin thumbnail of
this? I will edit it once explained! ;)

Derf, my post was in jest. Gas coming from the crack, not safe to breath. Get it? The crack is a butt, gas coming out of the butt...

I do understand how pressurized cabins at altitude work.

Nice B-17.

PS maybe one of those P&S shooters that don't know what aperture is can teach you how to make a thumbnail :)

Derf, Thanks for the dissertation on aircraft saftey, although this was a JOKE and I don't think anybody here is truly worried about cracks in aircraft windows other than the one pictured here.

As far as users of point and shoot cameras giving you advice on your photography; just because you can afford a DSLR doesn't mean you got skillz and just because another user is using a point and shoot doesn't mean they aren't talented and experienced photographers. I think one of the best things about this site is getting feedback from fellow photographers and the beauty about advice is that you can take it or leave it. Get real, man.
