Surrogate focusing?

No clue but my guess is that this is what we do when we can't focus on our subject (for some reason) so we focus on an object that is approximately the same distance. Example, trying to photograph a skateboard jumper. Have a friend stand in the spot where the jumper will be, focus on your friend. When the jumper comes along (provided your friend has moved out of the way), you snap at the right time.
