I am just very curious...
except for the brown border (that was a mistake)

why would this be voted a 1 or 2....

My point is some one saw something that they really didn't like ... I am at a loss to find what it is... concidering this pic just sold for 450.00 at 30X40 to a flight school. If there is something wrong I wanna fix it.

Thanks

You got 1 (1) and 4 (2's)...that's nothing considering the number of voters. Happens on every challenge really.

The image is fine. Might be a tad bit flat (use a little contrast bump). The plane itself is cool, but the background is a little distracting - would be nice if the plane was clear of the treeline.

Probably some low votes for the title having anything but a four-digit year.

I didn't get a chance to vote, but i would have probably given it a 5. The capture is marvelous and i like the tone of the image, but the background is really distracting and so is the aforementioned border.
Opening up the lens would have lessens the DOF some, but would have forced you to use a faster shutter speed that would have lessened the nice blur to the prop. Shooting @ 200 instead of 400 that would have helped too. Nice work.

i am really sorry that you got a one on this image. i, personally, gave you a 6. the reason, for me, that it wasn't a ten, was that the background (bushes) seemed to take away from the plane. i think it is a great shot -- nice capture.

it never ceases to amaze me that such great shots as this receive 1s and 2s. i'm sorry. perhaps it was a mistake? maybe they hit the wrong number.

it truly doesn't deserve those low scores.

I voted it a 5...that border really hurt it.

Nice photo, just remember, in any group of 293 voters, there will always be a few that are crabby:)

In addition to the other comments, increasing the contrast would have helped this image a bit.

I didn't find anything wrong with this image at all, nor did the person who paid the $450.00 dollars : }...I try to ignore the 1 and 2 votes really...perhaps they just don't like the military conotations, or they hate planes, and some people are just wierd...voting is all about personal tastes and agendas really...some of us know a good image when we see it, some don't...it's all relative.

There's nothing to fix here...it really is a nice piece of nostalgic Americana.

About the contrast...I like it as is...this added to the "vintage" look, to me this looked like an image that could have been taken by my grandfather back in the day...and the background, I didn't find it distracting, it was nice to see a plane juxtaposed against something...not just floating in dead air...again, it's all about personal tastes and I guess ya can't please everyone.

In the interest of post-challenge improvements, you might consider cloning out the utility poles and bumping up the contrast.

I try to think of 1s like this: There's always someone out there who is able to justify giving 1s, just the same as those who freely hand out 10s. The law of averages should balance out the extremists. So if you only got a single 1 and 5 10s you've beat the odds (in my book). Another way to look at it might be to ask why people gave you the 10s so you can do more of that:)

Good photo.

I didn't vote either but the best I would have gone is a five. As mentioned below the background is very distracting not as a whole but the proximatey to the plane.

Plane shots can give the viewer a better perspective when there is ground in the shot but either make sure the plane is above the background and not in it or sitting (taxi-ing) on the ground totally.

Although you have captured some movement on the props, plane fans would probably like to see a little more movement...I know it is easier said than done and I get beat up for it all the time.

Is it a 1 or 2 nope, just a grumpy voter.

BTW: I would have actually straigthened the horizon a tad (actually on the telephone pole vert).

Just my take...Andy

There's always a few that throw in 1's for whatever reason. Don't let it get you down.

I didn't get a chance to see this one. I would've voted it 5. The bushes are distracting in the background and the sepia tone feels flat. I would first do levels in PS and then proceed to layering tones (with opacity changes for layers). Then again, I don't remember if this was a basic editing challenge or advanced so I should just hush.

:-)

Nice capture though. Very good sense of motion. Your issue really is in PS post processing and you can pick that up with some study.

That was covered pretty well in this thread: About Time Capsule Scoring

I think they mean it was more than just the date, some wanted ONLY the date not other details.

Ya, I agree I see some awsome (award winning photos) with one's. Some people are on crack. I gave yours what it deserved. 10

I did not vote on your image nomad469. The only criticism I can think of is that a closer angle shot might have put the plane higher above the runway and allowed a clearer view of it's retracting wheels. The undercarriage would have appeared more clearly with the clear sky as background.

Don't let the 1 and the 2s bother you. You got relatively few of them.

Why did you choose not to use the year as your title?
08/17/2005 11:11:52 AM · #16
I quite liked the shot, but didn't vote the challenge, if I did it would have been a 7ish. Only things that kind of hurt it were the border and the fact that that plane didn't exist in 1945 but I doubt the voting public is really that pickey.
08/17/2005 11:19:41 AM · #17
Always ignore small numbers of 1's and 2's, that's my general rule. If you notice, almost every blue-ribbon winner gets a few. I dare not even speculate why some people vote the way they do.

In regards to your photograph, it is very cool. You chose just the perfect shutterspeed to stop the motion of the plane but give the propellar a little blur. Someone mentioned maybe boosting the contrast, but that's the only thing I would change. Job well done.

Thank you all !!!

I wanted to make sure that I wasn't giving my customer something that I missed ...

The 1s and 2s didnt bother me I understand some people have "different" standards on voting... I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something grossly wrong.

Dave,

Congrats on the sale!

Beautiful picture, reminds me of one of Howard Hughes's aircraft after he had test flown it. Too many chiefs on this site!
08/17/2005 12:14:16 PM · #22
Absolutely no reason for a 1 or 2. Perhaps those people do not vote any higher than a 6. It is all a matter how they vote. Is there scale 1-10 or 1-6?
08/17/2005 12:22:39 PM · #23
Thanks everyone for the congrats... It have been a very good couple of weeks for photo sales ...

I have to admit... this site has helped me get back into form after a 12 year layoff from photography... It is the truest form of metal sharpening metal !

Apparently someone didn't like the shot...
08/17/2005 12:30:10 PM · #25
Was the shot worth a 1 on average? No.

Was the shot worth a 10 on average? No.

The whole point of taking a vote across a population is to get a fair average score, which every image gets.

If you don't understand normal distribution, please do not complain about 1s.
