I wanted more clarity on the issue of model releases so I wrote to Alamy this morning.

Basically, the deal is this:

If you are submitting images portraying people (this includes tribals, silhouettes and body parts even if the face is not visible) under Alamy's Royalty Free license they should have model releases. The lady said their RF clients would expect this.

However, such images being submitted under the L license can be used for editorial purposes without a model release. They cannot be used for advertorial or pure advertising purposes without a model release.

On asking for further clarity about what fell into the realms of editorial, the lady said that most articles and write ups in magazines do qualify as editorial. I had used as examples articles in travel magazines and photography magazines - she said that unless they were promoting or marketing a particular entity they would count as editorial and not require a model release.
