Well, today was my first rodeo shoot...I've got three more weekends this summer to improve but I'm fairly happy with my start. It's a lot of fun, though!

Let me know what you think, especially if you've shot rodeo before and can give me some critique/tips for tomorrow!

You got some good captures there dude.
I like this one the best:

Wow! Very cool shots, love them all.

Sure wish we had rodeos here. I'd have to drive hours to find one.

Awesome images... very well done!!! I think you'll have a lot of fun the next few weeks!!! :)

You are doing a fantastic job with these! I have never shot rodeo, but have done some sports and you caught the action really well! I couldn't suggest any ways to improve. If your work with the rodeo is this good just starting out I can't wait to see what you get in the coming weeks. Very nice... great job!

I shot rodeos years ago with film and had alot of fun. I will be getting back into it this Fall, and I can't wait! You did well on your shots. The only thing I can tell you from experience is this. Open up the photo field of view a slight bit more, and try to capture the rope before it hits the calf. The rope should look like a halo with a tail over the head of the calf. Never try to sell a photo of someone that did not make the ride in time. Parents really hate to see a photo that their kid did not win anything in.

Very sharp pictures. What lens did you use?

In motocross the parents want photos of their kids riding regardless of whether they won or came in last. Since rodeos are not that way, what do you think the primary reason for that is?

Edit: I still have a lot to learn about sports shooting and what motivates people to buy, so this is good info. :-)

Thanks so much for the compliments guys and gals...I just came back from day two, so I'll post today's photos.

A few things I noticed I could improve on from yesterday's photos were:

Bullriding - distracting backgrounds
Bullriding/broncos - a split second too late for many of my photos (not necessarily the ones I posted...want the tail and back feet way up
Roping - as mentioned, timing with the rope

Well, day two's photos are on my computer...let's see how I did!

My absolutely lovely 80-200 f/2.8L...I love this thing. I got it used for a fantastic price but I would have easily paid the going rate of $750USD for this baby! If you can find a good deal on this lens, I highly recommend it.

Nice job Mike! Rodeo rocks.

The reason many parents do not want photos where their kids do not win is because of PRIDE. Money talks and Bull@@@@ walks, literally in the rodeo and cutting horse industry. These people pay alot of money for their horses and their status. No win, No show off. Of all the sports I have shot thus far, T-Ball is the most profitable. These parents are so souped up on compulsions, they don't care what it cost, win or lose. Amazing stuff!

I go back this weekend to shoot some more rodeo so I'd like to pass around the collection plate one last time for some feedback on my first rodeo last weekend.

See the photos in this thread or view them at //www.mikeschneider.ca (at the bottom under rodeo).

Your critique and advice is much appreciated...

I think your timing is getting better and better, great bronc and bulldogging stuff. Barrel racing, though, you'll have to learn what sells to those guys, a shot like that one from the first day they would not buy as the horse looks resistant and unbalanced. Look forward to seeing more!

Good point, thanks! Barrel Racing is my least favourite to shoot but I liked that photo because of the good light and tension. I agree that it likely wouldn't make a good sell. I'm trying to learn how to shoot photographer's photos (spills and thrills) as well as cowboy's photos (excellence and balance) - they are often two very different moments!

It's rained a bit today, so it should make for some different shots in the mud...I just hope it doesn't rain during the events!

Thanks...it's neat photographing the same event for several weekends, it allows me to try new things. I pulled out my 16-35 for a few shots and that's how I got such an intimate result. Hope to try the wide angle again sometime from a lower perspective, but not today...the sky is too bright white today as it's very overcast...

Actually, to me the dust makes the picture that much more exciting. You can see how the bull/horse/whatever is affecting more than just itself and the rider.

Very good shots. I wish I had a dSLR, stupid shutter lag on my camera is a pain in the rear.

And a few from yesterday...tried some new things again. Comments always appreciated!

all of these shots are great -- rodeos are so much fun! so much action and life...you really captured the energy in these.

especially the three you took today. i agree with the other posters that the bullriding shot from today is just incredible! makes me want to go to the rodeo at the state fair and snap a few shots. very inspiring!!!
