I took this photo last month sometime and never really did anything with it. Today I played around with it in Photoshop. The photo looks like I used the flash, but I can't remember. I know I did not have my tripod on me. Please tell me what I could have done to make this look better, besides having my tripod with me :-)

Check the EXIF data contained in the photo because it records the camera's state at the time of the photo. May give you an idea what you did.

If you didn't use a flash then it appears to be an overhead spotlight. No matter, if you composed the shot as it appears, then possibly you automatically set your exposure on the right portion/background of the flower. Had you locked the exposure dead center of the flower and then panned slightly to the right, you would have the same composition with a properly exposed flower and darker background. Just my 2 cents.

The bud itself looks more than sharp enough.
