Good morning,

Effective immediately, the prioritization rules for critique club have been changed.

Why we're changing: Up until now, all members of critique club were automatically entitled to priority in receiving critiques. In other words, no non-critique club member would be eligible to receive a critique untill all critique club members had received theirs. All critique club members' photos were critiqued in random order, then non-critique club members' photos were critiqued in random order.

The problem with this is that there are a small number of people who are listed as members of the critique club, but have not completed a critique for quite some time, or rarely complete a critique. Though these people only occasionally (or never, in some cases) make a contribution, they receive an automatic benefit, in the form of a virtually guaranteed critique every time they request one.

What has changed: Effective immediately, priority will be granted only to photographers who have completed at least 2 critiques within the last 7 days. Photographers who have completed less than 2 critiques in that time will be treated as if they were not critique club members for the purposes of prioritization. Please note this calculation is made in real-time. All you need to do is make your critiques to receive priority.

Also, please be aware that while the threshold is set at 2 critiques per week, critique club members are still asked to please try to complete a minimum of 3-5 critiques per week.

As a final note, there is also a change coming to the way users request critiques. The request will be made after voting ends, rather than at submission time as it is now. We hope to (but do not guarantee that we will) have this change in place by Sunday. A separate announcement will be made when it goes live.

Anyone wishing to join the Critique Club can PM me or reply to this message to request membership -- it's free, all that we ask is a willingness to help your fellow photographer!

I would like to join the critique club. Is membership in this site a pre-requisite?

Is there a set format for the critiques or does each person have their own set of criteria with which to analyze a photograph?

Site membership is not a prerequisite, and you've been added. There is no requirement that you follow a specific format, only that your critiques be as comprehensive and constructive as possible.

You've been added to the critique club, and I'll send you an email with additional information this evening.

Great change Terry, and thanks to to Drew and Langdon for coding work to make it happen.

I was one of the people who did only 1 critique per week. I need something like half an hour per critique, so it's a time issue for me and I thought one critique done in exchange for one critique received was fair. But I think I'll try harder now ;-)

While not a full-fledged member, I would like to also join the critique club. I always assumed one had to be a member to participate in the CC, but now I know that's not the case! :-)

I would also like to join the club.
I would also ask if the members could give me (us) newbies some terms and definition to be able to critique in a higher capacity.
such as:

DOF - depth of field - item stands out more, or something like that.

I can give my 2 cents but I would like some kind of structure to be a more effective member.
If not, its oks. still want to join.....

In the last few months I haven't had time to critique much or enter a challenge. I'm lucky if I can get one critique in. I think this is a good idea because it rewards those who put a little extra effort in. I also like the idea of selecting the option for critique after the challenge is over. Just wanted to add that and I'll try to do a little more in the future.

I know there is not perfect solution.
But I got some long and detailed critics, and I got very short one (almost like a long comment).
I am afraid that with this, we are going to increase the number of short critiques.

my 0.02, I do not have a solution to bring.

I encourage anyone who receives a critique that they feel is not up to standard to make me aware of it. If I see a pattern of critiques that could be improved I will work with the critiquer to help them improve their skills.

If someone is clearly abusing the system, they can and will be removed from the critique club, though I doubt there will be more than a very few (if any) cases where someone will have to be removed for that reason.
